WATCH ALONG | DOCTOR WHO | 4x11 | Turn Left

In case you missed the update post, I likely broke a toe this week and have been in a lot of pain. It's caused me to fall behind schedule this week. So, episode 4x12 will be posted either tomorrow evening or Sunday morning as I still need to record episodes 2x6 - 2x13 of Torchwood first.

One subtle directorial touch I've always liked in this episode: when Donna first meets the fortune teller right at the beginning, she turns left to walk away from her. But when the woman convinces her to come back and go inside her booth, Donna has now effectively turned right instead -- the wrong choice. That's the whole story in microcosm, right there. I don't know if anyone's told you about the rather unusual sequence of episodes between Series 4 and 5, but just in case: After the 2008 series (Series 4) there was the usual Christmas special, "The Next Doctor". Then there was no series in 2009; instead there was an Easter special ("Planet of the Dead"), then another special shown in mid-November ("The Waters of Mars"). Finally, there was a pair of specials, "The End of Time, Part One" at Christmas 2009 and "The End of Time, Part Two" on New Year's Day 2010. Only then, after a few months, did Series 5 began broadcasting around Easter 2010. (Strictly speaking, only "The Next Doctor" was part of the Series 4 production run -- the four specials following it were made in a separate production block after a gap of several months. It's probably easiest, though, to just number the specials as episodes 4x14 through 4x18, since that's how they were referred to during production.) These episodes need to be watched in the correct order, otherwise severe confusion will result... :-) Regarding the two spin-off shows during this period, Series 3 of Torchwood was actually a mini-series of five episodes, which were shown on consecutive evenings during one week of July 2009, i.e. coming between "Planet of the Dead" and "The Waters of Mars". Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures was shown in October and November 2009; Doctor Who's "The Waters of Mars" was shown on the weekend between its fifth and final stories. However, no problem will be caused if you decide to get SJA Series 3 out of the way before watching "The Waters of Mars".

Such a great episode! It keeps you wanting more. Rose came back, the darkness is coming, the bees are disappearing. We're definitely ramping up going into the season finale, only two more episodes and we'll be done with series 4. I can't wait!
