WATCH ALONG | CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO | 8x23 | The Dæmons: Part 3

Comments

The helicopter explosion was in fact extremely cheap, being a piece of stock footage which had been originally shot for the 1963 James Bond film "From Russia With Love". It had actually already been seen in Doctor Who, in the Patrick Troughton story "The Enemy of the World", when director Barry Letts had used it (in black-and-white, of course) for a similar moment in that story. Letts became producer of Doctor Who at the start of the Jon Pertwee era, and no doubt remembered the clip's existence when the same need came up in "The Daemons". I must admit I've never quite understood some of the characterisation in this story. For instance, just what is the Master trying to achieve by parading bits of trivial village gossip at the citizens' meeting? It's hardly likely to get them on his side, and he soon abandons his attempt at persuasion and resorts to intimidation using the animated gargoyle anyway. And the Doctor's hypocritical chastising of Jo really is a bizarre moment. I guess we're meant to assume that this, like his constant sniping at the Brigadier, is caused by him being by now thoroughly pissed off at failing to escape his exile and taking out his frustrations on everyone around him. Thankfully, "The Daemons" is pretty much the peak of this facet of the Doctor's character.
