What A Cartoon! - Strangers With Candy "Yes You Can't"
Added 2019-04-01 10:00:00 +0000 UTC
April Fools! We interrupt this week's regularly scheduled animation for a special podcast that breaks the format with some live action!! To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Strangers With Candy, Bob and Henry gab about one of their all-time favorite satires! Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, and Paul Dinello created one hilarious masterpiece parodying the after-school specials of the 1970s, and we dive deep into the second season premiere, Yes You Can't! So stop working at the artificial flower plant plant and listen now!
You mock Colbert’s current gig, but he’s making a difference at CBS who’s age demographic is at the top.

This is the best April Fool's Day prank since (checks watch) ever. I'd never seen this show before, but watched this episode and "The Virgin" Jerri for the podcast and it's the right amount of fucking absurdist humor for me. Without the DVDs I watched the two episodes off of Daily Motion, in kinda shitty quality (and mirrored) so I might have to look into finding a copy officially

I was 13 when this show came out and I just flat out didn't get it. I thought the main character was ugly and annoying and I really didn't understand why it was supposed to be funny. But to be honest, if something wasn't either: a) over the top and raunchy comedy like South Park b) full of boobs and butts, I probably wasn't watching it when I was 13. I didn't really get into or start understanding "weird"/alternative comedy until a few years later, partially thanks to Adult Swim and partially thanks to stuff like TV Funhouse, Reno 911! and reruns of UCB on Comedy Central, and I didn't get REALLY into it until Tom Goes to the Mayor.
I did eventually get reintroduced to it when a teacher used it (this exact episode!) in a writing class I took in college as a kind of writing prompt/thematic inspiration to one of the weekly papers we had to write. I learned to appreciate it, and have watched (and really loved) a few episodes here and there but have never had the chance to go back and watch all of it like I did with Upright Citizen's Brigade, Mr. Show, and other similar shows from the same time period. I really should get to that at some point. Thanks for the episode and the history and info on the show. Off to the coal mines to watch all the different shows and movies you guys mentioned!

Well done gentlemen, and I for one would LOVE it if you'd do the whole series. Exit 57 is a very hit and miss sketch comedy show, but the highs are possibly even more bizarre and irreverent than Kids In The Hall at their best. The Tennessee Williams-esque "Honey Pie" is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkNvj-A0K04

This was such a nice surprise. I remember how much I loved this show then it didn't air anymore and I forgot about it. I seem to be apart of the last generation who remembers afterschool specials so it has one of those nostalgic feels to it. The theme song in the 1st and 3rd season reminds me of the last ABC after school special opening which visually from what I remembered looked like the 1990s General Hospital opening and sounded like this song. I think after school specials at that point were trying to be cool for the would be millennials since they would be at puberty age in around 1996 (like me!) but it didn't catch on and it dissapeared by the next season without fanfare. SWC was the perfect satire to them. Excuse me while I binge watch the series.

Okay fair enough Although I think the idea of a cartoon but with live action people, that can probably be explored at a future time (maybe I will), just like how there's some cartoons like 6Teen where I question why they wanted to be animated. Well thanks for the response anyway.

We were just looking for a flimsy excuse to talk about one of our favorite shows. It's not any more complicated than that!

Could you guys please answer a question for me? You said at the start of this that you consider this a "live-action cartoon" in that it feels like a cartoon but with live people. Could you go into more detail about what exactly you mean by that? My first thought was maybe you mean "Well it's written like a cartoon because of how exaggerated things are and people wouldn't act like this," but then I feel like that could describe most live action TV anyway since so many writers don't know how people act and make them such weird characters that they could be in a cartoon. So could you guys go into a little more on what you meant with this show in particular?

Awesome! I love this so much. My favorite episodes are when the love you have a for a program shows in the podcast. It's why I am enjoying TalKing of the Hill, its obvious you have a real love for the subject.
Have you thought about keeping this for the next April Fool's day and doing a live action show each year? It's a great excuse/reason to make UCB episode.

thank you bob! love the show. Please keep doing it through current seasons. I am going to use your podcast as a way to make me watch all the new episodes after I stopped watching past Season 17 :)

We started the Patreon in the middle of season five. All of the episodes prior to that are located here: https://talkingsimpsons.libsyn.com/
