What A Cartoon! - The July 2020 Schedule

Summer is finally here, and with the current state of the world, you'll likely be spending it inside. The good news is we will be too, which is why we've got a bunch of extra-long podcasts scheduled to help get you through the month. July kicks off with our look at the oft-requested modern classic Adventure Time, followed by a true anime classic, Lupin the Third. And for the back half of the month, we have Disney's animated take on Marvel's Avengers, and an extra-long podcast about what's considered the studio's most forgotten animated movie to close things out.

And if you're not a subscriber, signing up at the $5 level will get you each episode a week ahead of time and ad-free, along with our collection of exclusive miniseries (like our currently running Talking Mission Hill) and over 100 bonus podcasts on top of that! And stay tuned, because our fall miniseries will be here before you know it!

Here's what's on the schedule for July:

Adventure Time - "What Was Missing / I Remember You" [Patreon Date: 7/6/20 - Free Feed Date 7/13/20]

It would be a crime if we didn't cover Adventure Time in the first two years of What A Cartoon, so we're finally dipping into Pendleton's Ward feelgood cartoon that dominated the teens (both the demographic and the decade). For what will likely be the first of several WAC episodes about Adventure Time, we'll be covering some important episodes full of feels, songs, and, of course, the whimsical sense of humor the show is known best for.

Adventure Time can currently be streamed legally on HBO Max.

Lupin the Third Part II - "Albatross: Wings of Death" [Patreon Date: 7/13/20 - Free Feed Date 7/20/20]

Hot on the heels of our Castle of Cagliostro episode of What A Cartoon Movie comes our look at an episode of Lupin's second TV series directed by the same esteemed artist. Of course, we're talking about Hayao Miyazaki, a name we've mentioned about a million times over the course of our many episodes. We've covered some of his films in the past, but this time, we'll be looking at some of his final work for the small screen before he went on to directed some of the most beloved animated features of all time.

Lupin the Third Part II can currently be streamed legally on Crunchyroll.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes - "New Avengers" [Patreon Date: 7/20/20 - Free Feed Date 7/27/20]

Though The Avengers have certainly conquered the box office in recent history, this superhero team has also built an empire on television. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes hit just as the Marvel Cinematic Universe truly exploded, though it left much less of an impact with its hefty 52 episodes. Even so, it's a classy little series, and the episode we're tackling this month features Spider-Man as an added bonus!

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes can currently be streamed on Disney+

An Extended Preview of What A Cartoon Movie! for The Black Cauldron [Patreon Date: 7/27/20 - Free Feed Date 8/3/20]

What exactly is The Black Cauldron about? No human being can truly say, but at the end of this month, we will know for sure and inform you, the listener, with our findings via a very long podcast. This fantasy flop nearly ended Disney feature animation for all time, and you'll soon learn why cauldron-based entertainment didn't win over filmgoers of the mid-80s. And remember: $5 patrons and folks on the free feed will hear an extended preview of the podcast, but if you want the whole thing (and access all other episodes of What A Cartoon Movie) you'll have to bump your subscription up to the $10 level.

The Black Cauldron can currently be streamed on Disney+

We've got quite a lineup of podcasts ahead of us, and that means plenty of ways for both of us to avoid boredom through another month of quarantine. So stick with us, because there'll be more fun to come, and even more great guests and surprises in the back half of 2020!

Us listeners are in for a world of smackings and whackings

Damn I was going to choose adventure time and one of those episodes for my request. Oh well, I'm glad you guys are doing those episodes. Gotta think of a new request now...

Isaac Fox

Literally all three of these are shows I considered when I was a Patreon. Awesome that they're all happening, and in the same month.

ShyRanger

The Black Cauldron finally wins it all. Now I can rest.

“Wings of Death” may be one of the finest animated films ever done, but it creates an unreasonably high standard for the whole second Lupin series, which really did have a lot of junk. It’s almost always recommended you DON’T start off with it. (And Miyazaki’s other episode is also a very poor series finale, considering the actual Lupin isn’t even in it for most of the episode.)

Woo! Very excited to hear you guys talk about Adventure Time. It’s not a perfect series, but it really laid the groundwork for the modern tv animation renaissance we’re currently living in.

Tashmon Dimps

Glad to see that, after several times of making it a back-up request, you’re finally covering Adventure Time for the podcast. It is only the most important animated show of the last decade. In case anyone doesn’t have HBO Max yet, it‘s also streaming on Hulu for now.

Alex Irish

I'm super hyped to watch The Black Cauldron for the first time!
