Originally bars were closed on Election Day not so much to prevent drunk voting but to try to keep machine politicians from buying votes with booze. I was a senior in high school when this episode originally aired and my friends and I were all big Simpsons fans from day one. The next week my Poltics and Government teacher showed it in class and we discussed how accurately it portrayed modern campaigns. We also viewed the Batman 66 episode where Penguin and Batman ran for mayor. Its satire was much less biting but I always felt Mary Bailey being honest and trustworthy but boring reflected Batman's stiff campaign. Also, Ross Perot wasn't the first third party candidate to purchase time to broadcast a half hour infomercial. In 1984, I remember seeing Homer's favorite nude conspiracy theorist, Lynden Larouche one night. Being a politically curious but stupidly naive young boy I was shocked to learn how Walter Mondale was secretly a member of West Germany's Nazi Green party.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who wondered where Marge got that Blinky fish for dinner. That bugged me for years. I always thought Marge hatched her plan immediately after refusing "snuggling" with Homer. It was her intention to get a full night's rest because she had to get up at dawn to catch dinner at the lake. She must have caught it herself because Bart didn't expect it & Lisa had no idea what her mother was up to when she said to "give her the benefit of the doubt." And despite Burns saying "it had a taste that can't beat" (which set up the ending), I don't think any legitimate fish vendor would believe there was a market for these monstrosities. Therefore Marge caught it herself that morning.
