It does stand on it's own, but I hate that you are missing out on all the tribute moments to the original series, the original characters and even the original actors in their characterizations. It makes this film even better. Also, you don't have the benefit of appreciating the developments of the alternate timelines and how the original timeline both differs and relates to this one. I would still suggest watching a selection of the top rated original series episodes. Someone else mentioned the top ten highest rated, which I would LOVE to see, and at least "Star Trek, the Motion Picture" and (the best of the original franchise films)"The Wrath of Khan" featuring the original cast, to understand why these characters have been so beloved for generations. I predict that you will fall in love too.
