Valentine started the fire at Fairchild manor...it killed Jocelyn's parents...and supposedly him and Jonathan....he had put the real Michael Wayland and his son in there...so that's who actually died in the fire. Yes she ran off to keep Valentine from hurting her unborn baby. She stayed with him because she was scared of him and had no way of getting away from him at the time. Books vs TV. it can get confusing without context.
