Our Life: Baxter DLC Build 1.6.9B 🎉 (PC, Mac, & Android)
Added 2023-04-22 18:00:03 +0000 UTCYes Baxter, here we are. This is it. The beta we've got for you today has the entire story of Mr. Ward!!!! Thank God.
I do need to explain, though, that generally a beta update is 20-25k words of new content. However, this build is 90,000 words bigger than the last one. All added in less than 30 days. That's never gonna happen again, not even close, haha. I was particularly motivated to just get this man out already after how many years it's taken to truly finish OL1, but it'd be unwise to push that much in the future. At least not until OL2's last expansion is on the horizon.
This does mean it's guaranteed that there will be some issues in the build. They should be fairly small ones, at least. I think any game-breaking problems were resolved with our own testing.
If you come across an error report screen, you can click the ignore button to keep playing!
And the last preface, is that a few of the backgrounds aren't done yet. So, there are stand-ins used for certain scenes. Now here's the download links-
Important Notes To Play the Beta:
- You access Baxter's Step 3 Moments by clicking a yellow button on the right hand side of the Moment Selection Screen.
- The extra Step 3 scene for Baxter in the 'and then summer ended' section happens after the credits!
- You need to play all of Baxter's Step 3 Moments to get the option to play Baxter's Step version of Step 4.
- Baxter's DLC begins in the Step 3 opening. You can play from the beginning of the story until that point or start a new file and use an option at the start of the beta to skip right to Step 3.
- Save files from this beta won't work in other beta builds or the main game. You can load saves from the main game in the beta but you need to play Step 3 from the beginning to see the new content.
- Minor spoilers: There's only one way to start a romantic relationship with Baxter in Step 3. There are three ways to start a romantic relationship in Step 4. You can date Baxter in Step 3 and 4, only date him in S3 and not in S4, not date him in S3 and only start dating in S4, or never date him.
New Content:
- The rest of Baxter's Step 4 is now playable. His story is included from start to finish!
- Over 90,000 words of new content was added in total
- The CGs will unlock in the gallery
- Missing and incomplete art from prior builds got added
- Errors were fixed from the previous beta
There's still final polish, fixing stuff, adding voice acting, and those odds and ends but it's pretty surreal to have the entire experience here. I'm gonna need more time to get used to that concept, aha.
With all that said, I just hope people are happy with what we made. Baxter's an incredibly dramatic man. He's lived up to his own goals of being unique in the world of Our Life: Beginnings & Always. Now we'll have to see if that's a good thing or not. Thank you for playing 💕

Finally finished it after days of reading the entire game again just to see the extra tid-bits or references added and it was worth it!!! 😭😭😭 I can't believe it's ended and it was just.. so amazing!! The last step of just us trying to figure him out, watching him grow and put in the effort, it just UGH 😩, makes my heart wrench in the best way possible! He's literally so sweet and as the game has pointed out, a huge softie. Watching him break out of the shell he's kept himself in and crying with him in the moments he's decided to share and expose his real feelings. I've truly fallen for such a character. Y'all did amazing with the writing and I literally wish there was more of him but that's only for my own imaginations now. And I just can't express the pure joy, sadness, and heart-fluttering moments that I personally went through just relating to him and being able bond in sense because of the realness of his character. I loved all the dancing moments, swooned with every scene, he's just so breath-takingly goofy! I love him so much 🤧 The way everything just loops back together from the summer in step 3 is so sweet and lovely, being friends with Xavier and seeing their reaction to meeting them before in Derek's DLC was priceless!! The attention to detail is everything and I can't appreciate it enough, I hope y'all also held a party for the work you've put in! I'm excited for when it comes out, I'm sure everyone else will enjoy just as much. Thank you guys again for such an amazing character and story! 🤩🥰

Also I feel like it would be canon that Baxter and MC would be together for several months before one of them proposes! They just can’t bare to be apart or do long distance any longer! <3 They want to be together forever. Additionally, if MC wants, it seems like they’d create their own family one day. I’d think that would be several years away (as Baxter and MC want to make up for lost time) but it might accidentally happen as well. I still feel like they’d both be happy all the same. But I do think Baxter would be worried about being a father or becoming like his own parents. But MC would be there to reassure him and so would all of Baxter’s new friends! Additionally, they could also adopt! Also how does Baxter feel about animals? Does he like them? I can see them having fur babies as well hehe. <3 I can clearly imagine their beautiful life together!

The way Baxter's story with MC felt as if I was suddenly roped into a never-ending dance performance. It was dizzying, heart-wrenching, bittersweet, yet oh so beautiful and precious. I would dance alongside Baxter as many times as I could and I would be so happy to be enveloped in his perfectly imperfect self. I never thought I could possibly like anyone over Cove, but Baxter really did the unthinkable. I think this DLC has to be my favorite now and I will continue to play this route time and time again. Major props to the writers and GB because you guys did such an amazing job! Much love as always <3 I can't wait for the official release!

The DLC was everything I wanted and more. I loved the angst and the tension btw the MC and Baxter throughout. Although Cove is my favorite character of the game, Baxter was my favorite route out of the 3. Totally worth the wait! I love this game so much it has a very special place in my heart. It has helped me through many dark times. No matter how many times I play, it can always lift my spirits. Looking forward to geting attached to OL2 as well!

It was so nice to see Cove again and relax after all that go go go, too. And we got to see Moms, and I think I might cry again. Nice crying. Then there is Jude and Scott, they're so wonderful. I can't wait to play it all again when it's released for everyone.

During the closing scenes of Step 4, it's mentionned it'll be sad to have the MC go, but Baxter reassures them he's fine with long distance dating and what not. Is that supposed to be that way even if the MC stays local and if we determine at the start of the step that it wasn't a long trip to get there? Most of the time the game takes note of these things and characters act different ways depending on that, so I was wondering if it was intentional here that the dialogues stay the same.

The writing was sublime and I loved all the characters, I found Baxter really relatable. Its amazing to have been here since the start of this game. This was even my first ever patreon I supported. 2023-04-23 15:49:56 +0000 UTCI skipped through Steps 1&2, skipped the moments that weren't Baxter-centric (or that I've played a million times), then played through the entire Baxter epilogue without skipping Baxter-centric parts and was still up until 2AM. I did notice two issues. Going to Baxter's after the wedding, the first BG is the Adam's living room. Then there was an error that occurred when I chose to confess my love. It was easily ignored and continued the story.

Very few game characters have been so important to me in my life as Baxter is, and very rarely have I been so invested in something as I was in this story. It's really incredible to see it finished now. Of course there is that strange feeling of emptiness due to it being done, to knowing there's "no more" (well, barring the last fixes and missing art and what not, but that's not the same). Anyway, it's been absolutely amazing! I have no words! It's been everything I hoped for and more, really. I'll now have to replay a few times to really let it sink in, but wow, this whole thing made me so happy and fuzzy inside. Anyway, enough gushing - I guess I should get on with my bug report, shouldn't I? - This one I don't know if it's a bug or something else, but during the in-bertween I've picked for my MC to "have a business on their own", because basically my MC is a singer and so that's the only option that fits that job. But when late in the Step the MC tells Baxter about their current life, it says they talk about their pet and their job and about the company they're in. Maybe it would be nice to keep it more "neutral" in terms of the job, so that no matter if the MC is in a company or not, it would still work? - I had an error saying "invalid syntax (baxter_step4_mc_confession.rpy, line 28)", if my MC decides to tell Baxter he wants more than friendship, when dancing after the mariage. - When taking a walk around Prism Vista and Baxter explains why did he pick this place to live, there is a strange typo with two random "ñ" in the middle of a sentence - "And while Virginia has it's positives ñ I enjoy its forests and the distinctly changing seasons ñ I never quite formed an attachment." - In the same conversation, if I pick the option to suggest "getting their feet wet", the next set of options seems to rather be an answer to Baxter, but he didn't say anything (though from the context I think it's something akin to Baxter asking if the MC wants to go in the water instead of the other way around or something) - answers include "Absolutely", "I've kind of lost my love for it" and so on. - Once with the whole group at Scott's and Jude's place, there is the same issue with the "ñ" when Miranda suggests giving the newlyweds a video call, and Baxter asks if it's fine since they're on their honeymoon. The issue comes in Terry's answer to that. - Another instance of the "ñ" issue is after exchanging phone numbers with Xavier at the home party. Aside from that, I've started doing adjustments to my "canon playthrough", and I have noticed in Step 3, if the MC is planning on "staying local" instead of moving away, when talking with Baxter about where is he from, we can't ask if it's hard to live away from the place you grew up in. Would you consider making it something that any MC can ask? It would make sense to still ask the question even if the MC isn't planning on finding themself in that situation.

Baxter and my MC were so damn cute together after getting back together! I nearly screamed when Baxter called MC "darling." 2023-04-23 01:30:18 +0000 UTCguess who just accidentally deleted their full paragraph comment :') ? let's start over haha damn that post-game depression has never hit so hard T__T it's currently 3am and i want to cry because i feel so empty after finishing this dlc lol this was everything i hoped for and more. after all of the previous angst, it felt so rewarding so have so much fluff and cuteness, and i definitely found myself LITERALLY giggling and kicking my feet at some baxter moments (basically every time he said "i'm in love with you"...) i can now confidently say that baxter is both my favorite love interest AND dlc, because the work you put out is simply astonishing. i love how we were able to see this full story develop in a pace slow enough to get through everything while still staying 100% entertaining. it feels so good to have been able to witness baxter improving and growing into the amazing man he now is, and i can't thank you enough for, honestly, one of the best visual novel work i have ever played. i hope everyone is the team is proud of themselves, because they should be. i was completely invested the whole time. and though the ending was obviously bittersweet, it definitely was the best outcome possible, and even though baxter and the mc's story probably canonically ends there, don't think i won't imagine what shenanigans they would get up to in the future haha this was just an incredible experience all around, and words can't express how much i've enjoyed it. i will definitely be playing the dlc when it's officially out, i can't survive that long without that man i'm afraid.. also, i have noticed some bugs that i thought would be useful to point out : 1) when baxter says "i'm in love with you" to the mc for the first time (just after the wedding), the mc's name doesn't appear, it says "none [family name]" 2) when baxter and the mc talk about going into the ocean, after my mc suggests going into the water, it immediately goes to another set of responses that go like "absolutely", "i actually kind of lost my love for it" or something like that. i assumed baxter asked a question about the ocean, but we can't see it 3) and just sprinkled all around the script lol, there would sometimes be random ñ appearing in the text, probably replacing commas ? i also noticed a few missing words but unfortunately i didn't write them down T__T anyway, all this to say that playing this dlc has been such an incredible experience, and that it has now a very special place in my heart. playing these monthly releases always were the highlight of my week, and i never thought i could be as fond of a character as i am now for baxter. thank you so much for this beautiful work, and i can't wait to support the finished product and all you other works in the future ! <3 now i'll go back to crying because i already miss baxter :D
