Hunter x Hunter Episode 147 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Hunter x Hunter 147, Salvation × And × Future, Koala shows up to existentially trauma dump on everyone. Meanwhile, Gon's spirit is so unbroken, not only does he think Ging will still be in the same city, he thinks he will still be in the same room 💀

Lol the Chimera Ant's revenge. I guess we can look forward to the Chimera Ants in Space arc

This came up again in the finale. I think this is maybe part of the function of both Ging and Pariston

Alex G

Endless HxH loop

Alex G

That's interesting, the way it hit me, they were sad because they were parting! Not cause of baggage. Wish we had more

This is a great analysis. I fell for that exact bait, looking way back to Netero's game of tag. Killua does seem to be the fan favorite of the show, unsurprisingly. Ultimately I do think they gave a lot to each other, just in very surprising ways. As I've said a bunch, the beauty Killua sees in Gon is the beauty he's not seeing in himself, but Gon has the spirit and he kind of mental framing that allowed Killua (and a handful of other characters) to notice it. Having finished the show, maybe it's something along the lines of Killua being the moral element and Gon (and Ging) being an exploration of adventurous spirit that allows discovery. Characters like Netero, Ging, Pariston... seem less concerned with right and wrong, and more about a process of learning through experience and maximizing potential, wherever that leads them. Maybe Killua is a counterbalancing force for that pursuit

Alex G

Maybe both views are compatible somehow. I think Gon does "die" in a way as the result of that arc. But life can also be seen as a series of arcs. I've heard that in tarot the death card is not literal death necessarily but great transformation. Mereum also died once before his actual death, perhaps because of his hubris? And he was also brought back by the wishes of his friends. So maybe it's a similar death and rebirth for Gon.

Alex G

Which isnt something entirely new since Kura was also the main star of yorknew. Thou Gon & Killuah had almost no screentime at all in the current manga, so its a bit more extreme than yorknew

Well i guess it's inevitable Killua is leaving. There wouldn't be any conflicts as long as he has Alluka by his side

I didn't get a chance to post comments last month during the Chimera arc, but I wanted to say that while it might be an unpopular opinion, for me Gon's arc concluded in episode 131. Since he's like our protagonist, of course the author didn't wanna kill him off the show, but realistically, there was no coming back from what happened with his final act, ignoring Killua and dealing that final jajanken. The author introduces this deus ex machina in the form of Alluka (who's not even using Nen, but some sort of other unknown that can grant any wish?) in order to bring Gon back, and while it's a cool story, it's more like fan fiction to me. To me, Gon and Meruem were two sides of the same coin, and on one side the human child became a monster, and on the other, the monster got in touch with his humanity (and then transcended that too.) But ultimately, both died a tragic death during that last arc (for me personally). At least Gon no longer has Nen. It's not outwardly stated in the show, but it is in the manga.

Yeah, I also liked the casual non-dramatic-ness of the apology, which didn't diminish its sincerity. It was in the same vein/vibe as the rest of their friendship.

The last image in the flashback is a recall to when they agreed to travel together. Gon would look for his father and Killua would look for something we wanted to do, and this episode marks the end of their character arc. That's why, even though the manga continues this is a very satisfying true ending.

is now a bad time to mention this is also their last interaction in the manga? not going to give details on the next arc itself, but Kurapika actually takes the main role for what we’ve seen so far. maybe after this arc there will be more gon and killua, but after the content adapted in the anime, we don’t see much of them.

Killua is my favorite character in this show by a wide margin, and he and Gon are exceptional foils. Gon seeming like a traditional bright eyed fully good heroic kid and Killua starting out as the edgy kills without a second thought deuteragonist. If you're familiar with the tropes of party composition at all, I think togashi baited the viewer/reader into seeing Killua as the lancer (vegeta, sasuke) of the show, but secretly he was the heart or moral compass. While Gon was a an immature kid who was only nice until things didn't go his way (he has a lot of maturing to do, but at this point seems to be on the right path), Killua is a profoundly empathetic and kind person who used violence and an air of apathy as a shield from his childhood trauma. But the best part isn't that he just immediately realizes after becoming friends with Gon that he is a heroic good guy now, he instead forms a co-dependent relationship with Gon and uses his bright cheerful nature as a sort of north star to follow because he believes he is completely undeserving of being a 'good' person because of his family and what they made him do. About halfway through the Chimera Ant arc, Killua calls Gon light, and says he doesn't deserve to be in his presence, but as the arc progresses, not only do we see killua take on one of the most proactively heroic roles in the arc (saving multiple people's lives instead of going on the revenge mission) he gains the power to literally produce light, while Gon on the contrary delves into his base urges and gains a literal dark power Only after this does Killua not only break free from his family finally by outwitting them with Alluka, but he also finally appears to have broken free of his perspective that he is scum who is feeding off Gon's light, no longer seeing him as perfect he can now be Gon's friend in truth instead of essentially a worshipper, and fully come into his own as a person. In the end, Gon is the one who has to learn from Killua's example, to live help others rather than acting on whim's, and I think that while their parting is melancholy they both gained a great deal from knowing each other and I'm sure one can headcanon that they'll have a life long friendship ala Netero and Killua's grandpa. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

They both hid their sad faces from each other. So sad. One of the best friendships in anime

You have to do a rewatch in Dub! 👏 lol

Not sure if you've thought much about what, if anything, you'll do with Hunter x Hunter post series, but I'd love to watch you react to the recaps another YouTube channel, New World Review, is doing in anticipation of the manga returning, or even something with the manga. It's crazy how much content happens after/gets foreshadowed next episode.

Killua in Episode 37: "There's nothing I really want to do... I'll help you look for your dad until I discover what I want to do!" This separation was foreshadowed for a long time, Killua finally found his higher purpose in Alluka.

I will forever not understand why they think I care more about seeing a Koala's existential crisis over seeing Gon and Killua's reunion, even though his speech is fantastic and even though the killer koala turning his life around and devoting it to Kite is a parallel of killer Killua turning his life around devoting it to Gon and then to Alluka. Spending so much time with the Koala makes the whole apology scene feel incredibly rushed and neither of them really unpack their emotions from the chimera ant arc instead its just brushed off. It was a scene that I was personally anticipating a lot, knowing how much hurt Killua was carrying. I wish they hadn't reduced it to a "well you know you already apologized or whatever" type of thing, it kinda diminished the emotional impact of their reunion tbh. But then again maybe at this point, Gon and Killua themselves might not be ready to unpack everything that happened especially since Killua probably is still not fully over what Gon did. So they kept things superficially happy between them for this short time, not acknowledging that the hurt went deeper than they could deal with. I think that's why, as they turn away from each other, their expressions fall. They both know that damage was done, but it's not time yet for them/they don't have the emotional strength to really break down their trauma and reconcile. This is reinforced by Togashi's word choice. The entire show, Gon calls Killua his best friend using the word Tomodachi (Special/Close Friend). But at the end of 147, when he says "We'll always be friends" he uses the word Nakama (Co-worker, teammate, comrade, acquaintance). Togashi is very particular about the words he uses so this was definitely intentional on having Gon refer to Killua this way before they go their separate ways. Hopefully the two of them can talk about it all later.

If I had to pick a single character to say it the heart of the show, I’d say Leorio, but if I had to pick a relationship, it’d be Gon and Killua’s. I was gonna have this all in my finale comment, but this feels like a more appropriate place to discuss Gon and Killua’s relationship. I’d like to point out the montage at the end. The whole sequence is chronological, until the very end where we see a bit from the episode that basically defines their relationship. Their talk on Whale Island. That conversation is probably my favorite scene to look back on in the whole show. To paraphrase their dialogue, Gon: “I’ll be looking for my dad, and you’ll be looking for what you want to do.” It’s impossible to quantify the effect Gon has had on Killua’s life, let alone the domino effect it’s had, but after all this time Killua finally has something he wants to do. To protect Alluka and take her to see the world she never could. There’s so much to their journey to talk about, but to discuss it fully and with the show’s themes as a whole, it’d be better to wait until the finale. You mentioned Togashi just writing whatever the hell he’s feeling about, and it reminded me of his tweet today that I found kinda amusing. x.com/Un4v5s8bgsVk9Xp/status/1833780260783223177 Yes, that's his actual Twitter handle. A better translation than the auto translate, provided by somebody on Reddit goes: "I was taking a walk in the middle of the night and suddenly a beetle bumped into me and disappeared without a word. A few days ago, a yellow-green mantis with a sickle did the same thing to me. Tokyo is a dangerous place." I would say this is cause for him to write a long story about bugs, but it seems he’s already done that.

People want the solace, the security, the freedom of no choice. If all means nothing then I didn't do anything wrong. My misery is not my creation. I'm just a victim of circumstance. Also justifies the low path of hedonism. People don't want to hear that true meaning is turning your gaze inward, and fixing the countless things wrong with yourself. Then taking as much duty and responsibility as you can bare, to help the minuscule amount of people with the minuscule amount of time you have in your life. That true meaning can only be found outside yourself. imo

Douglas Davis

I think what you're supposed to do when the song started playing is pause it and rewatch the entire series as a flashback and then continue

Sunny

Man. What a journey. Makes me tear up every time. Super excited for the finale, it’s probably my personal favorite episode of the show.
