If I apply the inverse logic we can just make a circle, there's not inherently any way any of those people couldn't replace a father of any kind - but in title Are we bestowing the title of "father" after meeting the pre-requisite of being present, or are we qualifying it based on the appearance of lack thereof of every possible attribute that we would define it as? If the former, no he's not. If the latter, then he's anywhere on the spectrum from underwhelming to overqualified depending on your personal perspective

I mean, there's a reason why Gon doesn't call Ging "dad" at any point since the Hunter Exam. He just calls him "Ging." He's accepted the fact that he doesn't have a father in any non-biological sense of the word. I don't think people really dispute that Ging was valuable to Gon, but Gon could also get (and to an extent does get) that same kind of thing from a mentor or friend like Kite. Is he a good "father"? Is he a "father" at all?

Ryan

I indeed said “a million dollars says this is your favorite arc.” I understand your sensibilities pretty well… which is why I know you’re gonna love Psycho Pass once you start it next month. 😉

Once again an unpopular opinion on Ging's placement as father - but I agree, and I've been waiting for your evaluation very curiously. Per nurture, Ging loses tremendously - but still wins out over actively horrible parents. Per value, Ging is either almost or entirely unmatched, and I think a lot of the reason people don't want to view it with that balance in mind is something else you hit on in this video... It would challenge a lot of people's static view of the boundaries, limits, and minimums of what a parent is

I was putting down watching this episode, i dunno i feel that if i don't watch it the show will not end, which is'nt true but xD HxH is a great show and i think a lot of people like it for differents things, but for me what i like the most is how the characters feel human to me, even binolt that was only in 2 episodes they gave the guy a backstory so you kinda could see why he was that way. In all medias a lot of times they create characters that are kinda perfect people, even their mistake are caused by other people, i find those kind of chars very boring to watch cause we humans are not like that, we do good things and bad things, a lot of mistakes, but that's the fun of it.

I love how this last episode grounds us back into the core feelings of Hunter x Hunter. That love of the world, connection to nature and genuine drive to experience new things that spurred Gon to go hunt for Ging in the first place manifests in such a perfect way to end off the anime adaptation. It is such a celebration of everything we've seen and experienced so far, and honestly it feels like it brings us back to the Gon we love after witnessing such a breakdown during the Chimera Ant arc. The tree is such a great metaphor for this. Representing not only that life is so much more vast than what we'd believe to be the pinnacle of human experience, but also representing how easy it would be for Gon to plateau once he found his 'goal'. Funnily enough, Ging is exactly the person Gon needed to hear from in order to avoid the pitfall that would occur upon meeting Ging and achieving his goal. As always, thanks for the fantastic commentary throughout the series. I remember thinking that you wouldn't have much to work with until the Chimera Ant arc, but you continue to extract so much value from each show you watch on the channel. You enhance the re-watch experience significantly and really allow me to appreciate themes, ideas and characters I've overlooked in the past.

Vincent

Thank you for letting my experience my favorite show in a new light. I’m so glad you enjoyed and you really gave me some new insights into the work and life in general on this journey

tpoints16

Also probably to prevent Killua from getting himself killed by going after Hisoka for revenge

This show should be a whole semester high school class study.

I can't believe you've finished this show, it feels like it wasn't that long ago that you started watching it. I've watched HxH a few times now and it somehow gets better every time. I always discover something new every time I watch it and I feel like there is still so many fascinating themes and messages within this show that I still haven't fully wrapped my head around. Much like AOT I feel like I will be watching this five years from now and still picking up on new things and also experiencing things through a new perspective as I grow and change. It's also amazing how this ending feels more satisfying than the endings to most other shows even though this isn't actually the end of the story lol. Although it makes sense considering this is the conclusion of the journey that Gon set out on at the beginning of the show. Also I believe there author is set to start releasing new manga chapters starting in October! Unfortunately I don't think the current manga arc will be adapted in the anime anytime soon though because the current manga arc is already pretty long and it seems like it could end up being Chimera Ant Arc length, so I don't think that the animation studio will want to adapt it until it's actually completed since the author's health is so tenuous. The anime ends at such a great place that I feel like they won't want to end up in a situation where they adapt like half of this new arc and end up not have a satisfying ending anymore because the author cannot complete the manga.

So in case ur wondering, a small synopsis for the next arc is basically about voyaging to this world beyond our world known as the Dark Continent. Basically the entire known world sits in a lake within the Dark Continent and outside that lake is a completely new land. It is said the chimera ants come from there and are only listed as a B tier threat where they’re from. There have been other expeditions to the dark continent in the past although each time there have been casualties and each time they encountered one of the “great threats”. It’s also said that the thing that possessed Alluka came from the dark continent.

You're right in that this arc really shines light on what the heart of the show is really about. Though, I think it's less the "chasing of the dream" and more the "unexpected wonderful things you encounter on your way to it." Though, since they're two sides of the same coin, because one comes with the other, I guess it becomes synonymous haha. Is there a level that's just too hard to reach for humans in regards to their relationship to themselves and to life? Or is it that most people just aim too low? You did say that you think anybody can enter that perfect fluidity, though it's really hard and justified it with the fact that we still live in a society and have to deal with the everyday life. Do you think that part is actually true, or also just falls into the mind convincing you to stay put, away from pandora's box? IE a limiting belief it acquired over time to preserve itself (its own internal status quo)? In other words, what if it's actually really easy, and the only thing required is simply to see through the smoke and mirrors of the mind trying to convince you of how scary and difficult that journey is? What if it's actually a human's birthright to integrate with the flow of existence (after all, we already are one with it, like it or not, right? Even if we feel different.), but it's something that most of us just don't recognize yet, so we create guardrails and rules to guide us in the meantime. The strong evidence I think for it being innate to our evolution as a species is displayed in how viscerally we gravitate with and resonate to stories that embody this "hero's journey". I can go on and on about this, but I believe that it just depends to what extent you stop buying into the mental noise (both internal, and external, which is expressed through the aforementioned distractions, rules, systems, etc). A lot of those who achieve a certain level of self-mastery all say similar things. You gotta want it like a drowning man wants to breathe. To an outsider, it looks a bit mad, cause they can't relate. To outsiders, those people seem overzealous in some singular idea and almost no one around them can connect to, since it's the only idea I think, that lies outside of one's personality construct. But to the "zealot", it's not obsession, or insanity, it's simply recognition of what's real and true. At which point, the next obvious question in their mind becomes: "why would I spend a second longer than necessary holding on to these falsehoods I've been carrying that have ruled over me and my life?" The whole thing becomes so obvious to them..

In episode 92 one of Kite's friends, Spin (the girl with purple hair), explains to Gon why she wants to be a hunter. She needs money to repay Kite. She bought the entire area of a mine where the Small-billed swans live before it was demolished. She says that the sight of thousands of small-billed swans taking flight with the light of dawn at their backs is the oldest and strongest memory Stinn (the funny guy of the group) and her have, it's their treasure and she wanted to show it to Gon and Killua once the mission was over...and this is what you see in the outro at 31:54

madgod

This is also the first time that I noticed mama bird was carrying a whole ass killer whale to feed her babies LOL

Sunny

I think it's such a great moment that Ging's answer to "what do you want?" is "All that I can't see in front of me," as he looks out over the entire world from the top of the tallest point you can get to that we currently know about. Absolute cinema

Sunny

Killua does not know that Hisoka killed Gotoh, so Canary got one of the shape shifter creatures to transform into Gotoh to 'protect' killua's feelings i guess

TK

Since its very doubtful we'll ever see an anime adaptation of the latest manga arc in the near future, I really hope you'll read the manga starting with either ch.340(where the show leaves off) or ch.0(Kurapika backstory prequel). Either one is a great starting point for your manga journey. There are other youtubers who have done similar manga readthrough reactions after finishing the show such as Marko's Anime Journey on yt or heck even your own channel here on patreon with the avatar comic and novel reactions(that are still unviewable on patreon btw). But even if you didn't react to it I'd still hope you at least eventually read it personally off camera. Also, in the Manga, Gon has a short conversation that's essentially his final thoughts about Ging that I know you'll want to read. It has no spoilers for the larger manga story arc that is currently ongoing: https://imgur.com/rpuJjWa.png

Thank you for the journey! I enjoyed the little detours to the fullest!

oerwhat

Gon's trying to get that 100% achievement in life.

The one thing that sucks about Hunter x Hunter is that it ends. That's multiplied by the fact that I choose to watch people journey through the show, and have watched it end multiple times. I'm not big on tattoos, but the one thing I've ever contemplated getting tattoed on me, is Ging's final lines. They resonate so well, and I truly love that idea.

I’d like to apologize in advance for the wall of text. I will try my best to keep it somewhat coherent, though with this being my favorite series, I have a lot to say. Despite that, this series is 148 episodes and there’s a lot I won’t be able to touch on, so I look forward to reading others’ comments. Hunter x Hunter’s core message is a simple one. Despite much of the show taking and twisting existing shonen tropes/ideas, one of its central themes spelled out at the end is essentially a variation of “it’s the friends we made along the way”. “You should enjoy the little detours. To the fullest. Because that’s where you’ll find the things more important than what you want.”. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the show, and embodies Togashi’s “I’ll write about whatever the hell I feel like” attitude. The fact that we can go from Yorknew’s somber, more serious tone, to the generally lighter Greed Island, then nosedive back into the deep end that is the Chimera Ant Arc and it not feel out of place is a testament to how well the characters are written. You’ve talked a lot about “Nen is life” but part of the reason that fits so well is because the show itself applies the same logic. While Gon did accomplish what he set out to do, everything else that happened was a side effect that contributed little toward his main goal, (that first encounter with Ging was basically just happenstance). Ging had literally nothing to do with the Chimera Ant Arc, yet everything that happened feels just as important as that final goal. It’s incredible how not just Hunter x Hunter, but so many shows with fantastical elements and powers and all that can be so relatable. I think it’s that core focus on the characters that helps the most with that. There’s something naturally compelling about HxH’s approach of basically just following our characters wherever they find themselves. And HxH doesn’t even stick to the same protagonist, with Kurapika taking the lead in Yorknew and post anime, and Killua during the Election Arc (though Killua feels like a secondary protagonist most of the time anyway). It also feels natural, and not like the characters are going on side quests that deviate from their main goals. The abstractness of said goals helps a lot with that, Gon’s in particular. For the entire story Gon has little to go off of to find Ging, and because of that it doesn’t really matter what we see him doing, it’s easy to get behind since it doesn’t feel like he’s putting something off. It’s even easy to completely forget about his main goal at times, since we become so focused on watching him experience his life. I’d like to avoid retreading too much ground, but the show’s ending statement really is just perfect. Few stories have gripped in the same way this has, and it’s hard to understate the effect that simple message has had on my life. I think it’s less the message itself, and more the delivery of that message. The message is simple, but the meaning behind it can be found in the story of HxH itself. It’s easy to look back at one’s own life and see just how often it can be applied. One of my closest friends that I’ve now known for over 7 years I met because one day I decided to do the Taken King raid in Destiny. I’ve decided to talk a bit less about specifics with the characters/plot here, since I’ve been doing that plenty already for 148 episodes. So instead I’ll talk about the source material and Togashi a bit. That montage at the end was pretty much shot for shot with the manga, and even then there’s so much that happened that it didn’t touch on. They pretty much jump straight into the next arc immediately after this chapter, though we do get a few pages on some concluding thoughts from Gon on his conversation with Ging shortly into the manga. imgur.com/a/Xt3F4Hg This is about all we get from Gon at this point, as the rest of the manga shifts gears dramatically, as Kurapika, Leorio, Ging, Pariston and many others are off on another detour. Less than a year ago Togashi talked a little about his plans for the very eventual end of Hunter x Hunter, and decided to share some of his philosophy on it. He also shared with us an ending that is no longer a candidate, and to quote the man himself, “If fate takes me before finishing the manga, consider it the manga’s ending. I would be happy if you forgive me for that.”. www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/17zn77f/togashi_has_revealed_a_version_of_the_ending_if/ Alright, I think I’m gonna wrap it up here. I once again apologize for such a large comment. I wish Patreon would have a “show more” feature like YouTube. Though, I could have sworn that was a thing at some point. Anyway, while it’s always sad to reach the end of the anime, I could not be more thrilled that we have (at least) another 10 chapters coming out in a month. It’s not often I’d recommend something unfinished, with an uncertain future of said thing being finished, but I can’t recommend the manga enough. The whole manga, not just the post anime manga is very worth the time, and I hope that one day we might see a return to this incredible series.

i think the biggest problem with what ging set up for gon is that he didn’t take into account how his absence would affect him. makes sense because he is pretty self-absorbed. i think he genuinely meant well and thought gon would have a good life on whale island. he didn’t know if he would be a hunter, especially so young, but the fact that he did is where the danger lied. ging became a hunter when he was gon’s age. but unlike gon, he became a hunter independent from others’ influence. as a father who never met his son, i think his best idea of what would be a nice thing for his son was just imagining what he would have wanted as a kid. he didn’t know if gon would be a hunter like him, but if he did, he falsely assumed it would be for the same reasons as him, not knowing how obsessed his son would be. he didn’t stick around and properly be a father, but i think he just wanted to do something nice in his typical roundabout way. i think this ending was good for gon and derailed his obsession. slightly jumping ahead in the manga (the conversation isn’t too important to the plot) but Gon went home to Mito and basically just said to her “Ging is cool, but he kinda just feels like a cool uncle”.

I've been waiting to point this out again for 147 episodes. "Gon's just proving himself to be the master of sidequests," -Goodwin about 10 minutes into episode 1 of HxH

Sunny

What a great journey. Been super awesome to watch you experience this story. That final line has always resonated with me greatly. It always makes me think about the immediate moment I’m in, and helps to ground me. Whether it be through my own personal relationships, my passions, my political activism, or anything else, the concept of enjoying all the little detours on the way to my “goals” has always been very special to me. And thanks again for giving interesting and insightful commentary on the shows you watch. It’s always a highlight of my day when a new video gets released.

Vali Sippola

I would like to point out that when Gon said it took him 20 mins to climb the tree, that included the 10 mins he waited for the rescue team to come and help that guy, so he really climbed the tree in only 10 mins.
