Kat, you should look up the behind the scenes footage of this episode! It's amazing how they pull off those insane long shots!

This episode is a director’s masterpiece. He had a plan for this episode, and because of that plan- he built the two sets attached at that back hallway. This connected the funeral home directly to Hill House, and the only time that hallway is used is in that one scene. He also took two weeks with the lighting and camera crew running through the entire episode, making sure the beauty lights were in the right spots at the right moments and the camera wasn’t missing any marks. He also made the very, very wise decision to use ACTUAL rain machines on the exterior of the sets (they actually flooded a few times), he wanted the rain to sound and feel as real as possible. When the cast arrived for the filming days everything was in place, and surprisingly there was only a couple scenes that had a few issues- he was also surprised that the child actors didn’t make one mistake, at any point. Most of the scenes were recorded only two or three times through and the last scene he only recorded once. He said he knew he had it, it was the end of the roll and the end of that day- so he rolled the dice and moved on. This episode is one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever watched, the performances are incredible and the space the director gave the actors to play within their characters is amazing. I can’t praise this man, this cast, or this show enough.

I think she'll really enjoy his film "HUSH". So good.

I've seen this episode so many times and I still tear up at the end when Nell says, "I was here the whole time and none of you could see me".

Definitely one of my favorite episodes! The work that went into it is so impressive 👏

This episode may be my favorite single episode of any show ever made. Those long, amazing takes and the precision required to do something like that is incredible. And then if you put aside all that technical wizardry, there's this heartfelt, realistic interplay between all the characters. It's astounding. Of course, I'm not saying that the other episodes AREN'T also great in their own ways, or that the show as a whole isn't fantastic. But this episode... Wow.

The one-two punch of episode 5 and 6 is just incredible. The pain, the grief! It’s unmatched!

This show always scares me but manages to makes me cry. I very much recommend watching more Mike Flanagan shows

Yay, the rest is up! If you haven't already seen it, there's a whole 'behind the making of' for this episode on YouTube. Fascinating.
