The ancient immortals had more animalistic characteristics, among them a specific smell. As Gabin says, that smell was lost as the generations went by, and as it was lost the immortals stopped being able to identify it... causing them to start hunting each other as well xd
and a mini lore of humans, in the past hunters did not stand out for being elite people, as many chose this profession because they were of lower classes and despised people.
Over the years they became more recognized in society, earning wealth and status.
Then, being a hunter became elite. Even as a sport practiced by the rich.
