Updates for you guys!
Added 2021-08-28 16:47:37 +0000 UTCHi gang! Here's what's going on this week.
First of all, if you haven't already seen the Community post, we've decided to put the Joel/Sal Elseworlds Exchange on hiatus until after Labor Day in September. The reasons for that are simple-- there are only so many days available, we're both really busy on Fridays this summer, and Fridays will get easier once the summer is over. But I've been trying to supplement that missing block of time with either a special guest Elseworlds episode or more episodes of GBU. So don't worry. It's coming back sooner than later!
We filmed our 400th episode of Back Issues this past Thursday. But here's the funny part... It's actually our 403rd episode! We filmed an episode a few months ago that I still haven't cut, we shot our Batman Earth One Vol 3 episode the other day which I'm about 20 minutes into editing, and we filmed our Onslaught Redux episode for the big 4-0-0! You'll see my reasoning for that in the episode, but I promise you're getting a very different kind of show than the Mike/Ming Onslaught you got. I'd like to normalize the idea of reduxing old episodes with either new, better, more robust info/content, or a different cast.
For me, the show is the four of us. For a lot of people, they prefer to watch episodes about characters or even publishers they prefer, which I think is selling the show a little short. It's the interactions, the reactions, and the camaraderie that sells the show, and then there's also this insane backdrop of a great or terrible book to talk about.
So if you've never seen the gang react to who Onslaught is, or you've never seen them react to the Tri-Sentinel from our Cosmic Spidey episode with Comicstorian, or Joker's face being ripped off in Death of the Family, or an actual discussion of the ending for Dark Knight Strikes Again, I think there's value there. Yes, there are books we haven't done yet, and it might strike you as disappointing that we'd re-do an episode, but if the show is about our interactions primarily, I promise you're getting a good episode regardless.
And look. We're on 403 episodes with less than 100,000 subs after 7 years. No sign of slowing down yet. So we'll get to it.
I also had this really dumb idea for a joke sketch to open episode 400 that makes a reference to literally nobody's favorite movie while also getting ahead of the comments about us redoing an episode. So obviously we filmed it. And the funny part is, Tiffany is cutting that segment. It allowed me to edit the whole two-hour episode down to about an hour twenty, maybe less, while she got that segment cut at the same time. This makes the episode not just 89% done by Saturday, but it also gets the episode out faster to YOU! And I need to cut that Earth One episode so that can be ready before next week...
Anyway, it's pretty funny and very us. So I think you'll like it, since you're here. We don't do a lot of sketches much anymore, which I think is kind of a shame since my crew (minus me) are all really talented and funny. But we don't need to distract from what most people are there to see. 400 episodes is a pretty big deal, so we took the opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if we did a thing for episode 500, either.
We didn't get a chance to film GBU this week, but we did read three Dark Matter character intros, so when that's shot I'll let you know.
Off the Rack is going really well, I think. Honestly, I'm not sure what the star of ComicPop Returns is, which is kind of awesome. All the videos perform reasonably well (unless Black Widow is in them), which means it's working. Pretty much the same amount of people who used to watch them on ComicPop with 96,000 subs are watching on a channel with 12,000 subs. That means everyone's getting what they want, and YouTube can let Back Issues get pushed to subs and maybe get out to recommendations since the bulk of viewers are watching that show and not skipping anything else. So if anybody asks why we did this, that's our answer. Everyone gets what they want this way.
I really want to talk about the future of ComicPop and figure out exactly what you guys want, but I'm not sure what the best method is to reach you guys. Is a conversation here worth it? I feel like you see the posts, but there isn't a lot of engagement with them, so I'd rather communicate with you the way you'd like to be communicated with. So let me know!
I would like to do another video like our Substack conversation. Not only did it perform well, but it was fun to make, it looks good, and it helps get us out there and showcase what makes our channels special. Any ideas for big topics, as always-- share them with me!
That's about it, I think. Thank you guys so much for being here. Big announcement, actually: thanks to YOU, Ben and Ethan are being paid to do the channel. That's right. You Patrons allow them to do this for the equivalent of a monthly stipend. We've been doing it pretty much for the past several months, but I kept forgetting to tell you guys. So here we are. Thanks to you.
As always,
Sal

First thought that comes to mind on big/timely topics to cover is DC Fandome and the state of DC Publishing post Dan Didio. Will keep brainstorming!

2021-08-30 17:13:07 +0000 UTCThanks for the update!! Love you guys, and so glad to support any and all content you put out there. Redux-ing some Back Issues is a great idea, and I can’t wait to see what you guys do with it. Be safe, and be kind to yourselves.

2021-08-29 20:40:49 +0000 UTCI am joyed that the patreon is resourcing comicpop to the point that ben and ethan are compensated. You are all so talented and committed. In terms of videos, I would watch everything you make which I know you hear a lot. I love discussions and opinions more than anything. It's why Off the Rack is probably my favourite show. I loved the recent comicline. In terms of back issues, I am so here for redux episodes. I think both time and different people inherently create different perspectives. I love the Cosmic Spidey episode. I also love re-watching the other 90s Spidey episodes with Ben and Ethan and I think a redux of cosmic would be a great addition to this. I personally think some of the older, shorted episodes could be reduxed. Possibly with Tiff as a fresh perspective My go to suggestion for a back issues episode is New Krypton. I do miss elseworlds BUT I know that time and waiting can bring on good things. Take the time and I hope you and Joel are both well. In terms of best way to have the conversation...only thing I can think of outside a text post is maybe a patreon live chat discussing the channel? I can't thank you enough for the hours of content. I've doubled down on my watching past episodes while I have been in lockdown. It's the thing keeping me distracted and sane.

2021-08-28 23:41:48 +0000 UTCI really like the idea of redo episodes where the gang didn't react to the story or back in the day when the episodes were really short to get a more I depth look at them. And I would also like to see a possible harbor patrol return lol

2021-08-28 22:47:31 +0000 UTCI am so happy for you all that we have affected your lives just as much as you have for us. Thank you so much for everything you've put out. I do feel talking about current subjects in the comic world like the sub stack video was really informative and gets non comic readers interested, but also gives normal fans a different way to interact with the people in the industry. I think it would be cool too if you guys did a video where you pick a character and just say what you love about them, your experiences with them growing up and their importance in the world of comics. So excited for onslaught AND earth one vol. 3! Just finished Amazon Attacks and wow, just wow. I have some reccomendations I would love for you guys to do someday whenever the time feels right. I would adore to see Tiffany talk about Morrison's Doom Patrol run and possibly Animal Man? I'd also love for you guys to talk about Marvel 1985,The Asgardian Wars, Superior Iron Man, 52, Preacher and also his run on The Punisher. And I haven't seen anyone talk about this on YouTube at all except by webcamparrot, but Superman Where is Thy Sting? by DeMatteis? I heard it's a really interesting story so I thought it be a cool vid. I apologize for the long response but I love your guy's content so much and it really gets me by. I am in the military and am currently dealing with a lot right now physically and emotionaly. Your videos are a highlight of my day and I want you guys to know that you have fans from all over. Thanks again and can't wait for more content ❤️.

2021-08-28 17:27:31 +0000 UTCSo stoked for the episode Redux and for Ben and Ethan getting paid. Either interactions here or on Twitter are the best for me, but I think that's due to post notifications for both. Happy there's no sign of slowing down. I'mexcited for more content and seeing what the crew brings to the table. Maybe Harbor Patrol 2.0 on Returns including Ethan too?

2021-08-28 17:14:33 +0000 UTCGlad to hear all this! I’m always happy to hear how the channel is doing and I do really like the idea of redux videos. I don’t know comparatively how much engagement you get on here versus on other platforms, but personally I’m more likely to see something like that on Twitter or if you do a post on YouTube. I just don’t always get notified on here and I only check it maybe twice a week.

2021-08-28 17:00:09 +0000 UTCI like the idea of some redos. Y’all did so many of the huge stories so early on that seeing a modern/more in depth discussion is exciting.
