I’ve always kinda looked at Squid Game being the adult version of the Hunger Games 😅 Also it’s interesting how most English speakers aren’t used to subtitles and will avoid it if they can lol I grew up reading subtitles so I’m used to it

I'm glad you went with the original audio, I think all shows are the best in their original language, the emotions can't be ever recreated in a studio perfectly, although that probably doesn't really apply to animated shows. I haven't watched many anime but I love Death Note, I think you'd absolutely love that one if you haven't seen it already. I think watching Squid Game the first time is awesome but it does have a few plot holes... I remember having a lot of questions in the end but maybe I just didn't pay enough attention. I only found it kinda weird how easily the cop got in - for a cop he wasn't very sneaky and careful if I'm being honest haha. They could've easily got him MULTIPLE times but I guess for the sake of keeping the plot going they just let it be. Some of my friends who also watched the show didn't like the second episode but I agree with you, it was actually so good, you get a much better understanding of each character and their motives and the storytelling is great. I could watch a whole series just about their daily lives and struggles without all the games and I'd still be thrilled how it's gonna turn out for all of them.

2022-12-19 17:34:10 +0000 UTCso excited for anime reactions!! i def recommend watching some of those with subs and not dubs as planned, since it's very hit-or-miss with the dubs. some are fine, while others are... yeah. squid game, even though it's live-action, got dubs that absolutely sucks ass lol. so depends on the anime/show tbh. for me, every anime can be seen in sub, but not every anime can be seen in dub. especially for a first time viewing to get the best experience. some anime have fine dubs, but i recommend askin around with the show(s) ur planning on watching in regards to dub vs sub, perhaps in a poll or smth for each specific anime? i never watch dubbed anime first-time-through, often times not at all, since its not really my tastes: i jus cant get into it, the voice-acting jus isnt doing it for me ..which distracts me so much lol.. and i just cant connect with the characters and show as much. if you have a fine time watching squid game and reading the subs, i 100% recommend you watching anime first-time-through subbed, always. you could also watch one ep dubbed and one subbed to form ur own (short) opinion lol. anyways, cannot wait to watch squid game w u!

2022-12-19 17:19:55 +0000 UTCno spoilers, I just want to tell you the meaning behind the concept of squid game, what it represents in our society, which is basically an analogy to capitalism and how it takes people to the extreme, taking everything from them to the point of making them risk their lives, harm themselves in exchange for the chance to survive. and for the richest it's all a game because they are not affected by it. capitalism is modern slavery. as yoongi and namjoon said in strange: "Capital injects morphine called hope with dream as collateral. We’re given multiple choices and our taste is controlled by the capital"... meaning, we think we have a choice, but the options are already decided for us

I've watched it a few times, including with some friends who watched it dubbed, and the translation was TERRIBLE and didn't even come close to the subtitles (translation of dub), while Korean friends said it was just a wrong translation in the first place

Also, you did it right with the Korean audio and plain English subtitles (rather than English CC). Make sure to keep it on the regular English subtitles going forward and not "English CC" because the English closed captions are the transcription of the English dubbing, not the translation of the Korean audio. I have read online the English subtitles are much more accurate to the true meaning of the Korean audio than the English CC.

You are very right that Sangwoo was trying to kill himself, that's unfortunately a pretty popular way to do it in South Korea via charcoal burning in a closed room that leads to carbon monoxide poisoning. I feel like you kinda missed the point when the cop was talking to his mom and that he is searching for his brother! This show is pretty great, there are momenst people consider plotholes later on but I have watched it many times and all those moments are usually explained in the show if you watch closely enough or just don't contradict any information that we know but leave for more to be explored in season two when it comes.

This show is HARD to watch. I think what makes it so brilliant though, is that everything shocking has pay off. The show takes a really hard, grounded look at the world, through a very exaggerated shocking lens. This is one of the best pieces of media in the last decade for me, but it's a lot to handle

Also, the girl comes from North Korea and wants to pay someone to help her family cross over to South Korea. (That part was right after the hand crushed scene and I think you missed that explanation.) The fact that she crossed from North Korea plays a big part in her role too, like in the Dalgona episode because she didn't grow up playing that game, same as Ali.
