Grease | Musical Reaction

This film is something lmao

Comments

I put off watching this because of how toxic it is and was nervous to watch it with someone that has never seen it before. I grew up with this movie and can't remember exactly when I realized just how toxic it was but by that time it was already nostalgic to me. I still love it and feel all the feelings when hearing the songs, but sure did cringe a lot when watching with you. Haha

I used to listen to the record of this on repeat when i was a kid. Fun fact, the band in the dance of was Sha Na Na and they had a fun little show for bit during the height of their success. My family and I used to tune in because they were fun and bowser became notorious for his deep voice, I saw some e had a link to all their episodes in case you want to check it out. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL287vAEqArcp-7xQEkrdQgWOVh0NRuMpn&si=tYAWNYC-tZM5MDCz

This is one my all time favorites. Love the soundtrack. To this day, I memorize all the songs. 😅 Oh, for added context, while it was filmed in the 70s, the story takes place in the late 50s.

I love this movie so much, despite its obvious problems, because of the deep nostalgia it gives me. And the more i watch it, the more clear it is how High School Musical was based off of it. The character parallels between Danny and Troy, Sandy and Gabriella, Rizzo and Sharpey, even how they met on break and then happened to be in the same school. It just feels so youthfully idealistic in its romance.

It's been many years since I saw this last, and what sticks out to me most is the contrast of the characters in Grease versus the actors they name drop. Debbie Reynolds, Sandra Dee, Dorris Day, Troy Donaghue, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello were all known for their squeaky-clean image. Grease's raunchy humor is the antithesis of the teen films that were actually made in the 1950's.

Julie B

oh God this movie did not age well at all lol.

Jay H

Also, if you want to watch more John Travolta dancing you have to check out Saturday Night Fever and Staying Live. Both soundtracked by the great Bee Gees.

Angelique Juliette

😂😂 ahhh that makes way more sense

Lisa

this just made me excited for glee reactions lol

ke

There’s a clean version that changed it to scream that I think is played more at school dances 😂

Susan Deans

I agree!

CGoerlich

If you haven’t seen it, dirty dancing is soo good!

Emily

Wow the first time I watched this I think I was like 12....watching now as an adult is a crazy experience, it's so problematic lmao but the songs still slap.

Alycia Ortiz

It’s such a controversial movie but so nostalgic when you grew up with it. I know I wouldn’t have liked it if I didn’t grow up watching it 😂😂

Emily

this movie sends such a bad message but i still love it lmao the music is great

Lorena Oliveira

This movie is one of my all time favorites! That being said, as an adult and with times changing it is definitely one you have to watch while being fully aware of the time period and happy thats times are changing Lol. Loveee John Travolta in here. This movie and Pulp Fiction are just iconic.

Marissa Franco

Ah yes the 50s…. sexism, racism, homophobia, fat phobia, normalised pervert behaviour, hand jives, diners and milkshakes! Good times! This movie is soooooo ? But I do love it and the music, it’s very nostalgic to me and I just laugh at the ridiculousness and offensiveness of it. What else can you do? I’m glad things have changed enough for me to be horrified by some of the dialogue. As for location: It was a musical first set in Chicago I believe and then the movie is set in California? Doesn’t sound like it at all. I don’t know what the accents were like in the original musical and if this is a carry over lol. But I do know that the real “Greaser” motorcycle gangs in 1950s America were often made up of a lot of Italian Americans as well as Hispanic Americans, so they probably just got a lot of known Italian American singing actors (likely from New York and New Jersey) and called it a day 😭 this is all a guess though. Just a deeply, deeply unserious film. All your sighs throughout were hilarious 🤭

Oh I Love this movie haha it is cheesy and old but it is a classic for a reason. The songs? Straight bops all round. So, as mentioned, the movie was made in the 70's but the story is set in the 50's so there are a lot of things in it that are problematic but it was expected at the time as well. The plot is basically a romance of teenagers during senior year of high school and the chaos of it. It is a silly weird movie but I guess that is the point as teenagers are chaotic and behave very intensilly about everything, specially "romance". BTW, you said how they like old for highschoolers and yes, they are older and grown adults however, it was normal for the time for teenagers to look a lot older than nowadays. It has to do with what was considered beautiful and what was fashion etc back then, with the make style, hairs and clothes. If you see interviews of people from the 50-80 someone that were like 20 looked 40 easily hagah Travolta is awesome and his dancing is incredible and very charismatic but Olivia matches hist timing and charisma so so well. They did an amazing job in this movie.

A hickey from Kenickie is like a Hallmark card: When you care enough to send the very best ✨

Ibby

Gobsmacked - I had no idea grease lightening lyrics referred to cream 😂😂😂😂 every school dance played that

Lisa

I love this problematic movie. This was such a fun time. I saw the caption of this one and just laughed. It definitely hasn’t aged well in some aspects but yes the soundtrack is great. I listen to it all the time and is one of my favs.

I'm 59 years old and saw this movie in the Theater when it came out. I always totally understood this movie... UNTIL NOW 😆 Thank you for the infectious laughter and just having a good time. I have seen this movie so many times over the years. My mom wore the VHS versions of Grease and Grease 2 out. I always watched it with her. I currently own both DVD's . You really should check out Grease 2. It does have a little better plot than the first one. The Music is great in that one also. As for John Travolta.... He is in other Dance movies. Like the ICONIC Saturday Night Fever and the Sequel to that... Staying Alive. John Travolta plays a New Yorker that is into the DISCO scene in Saturday Night Fever and still playing the same Guy Tony Manero in the Staying Alive he is trying to get into the Broadway Scene. But Travolta definitely has some awesome Dance skills that are a must see. My favorite of the two is Staying Alive. Really Enjoyed the Watch A Long.... Thanks a Million.

This was a fun rewatch with you. The songs definitely are why this movie has reached the iconic status that it's had in pop culture to the point where people have heard many of the songs without having ever seen the movie. There are definitely elements in it that haven't aged well, but it's such a fun fever dream of a movie that if you can turn your brain off it's a good time. This is the first version of Grease as a film, but it was a stage musical before. The thing that popped up for you is probably either the sequel Grease 2 with Michele Pfeiffer as one of the new lead characters or the version that was filmed and broadcast live on tv which is a really fun watch with a great cast.

Okay, maybe not an ode to Grease, but I know Vanessa said something how it made her feel like it was like Grease in a way. I don't remember necessarily what she said. 😂

CGoerlich

Okay. Wow. I must have not seen this movie in yearssssss. Definitely see it in a different light now. 😂🤣 But anyway, it's funny how you mention their ages at threbeginning bc it reminds me of like a Good Morning America segment with the cast of High School Musical when it first came out. The anchors at the desk were like "wow a movie about high school students with actual young people" or something like that and I think they were comparing it to how in Grease, everyone was like 24 and older. 😂 I also mention HSM because a lot of people said HSM was our generation's Grease. Bc they had a similar plot (two ppl meet, end up going to same school, one's a jock and one's a genius, etc.). But to me HSM obviously did better with the plot. But Vanessa always said she felt the last song of the third movie was like an ode to the finale song of Grease. 👍 Speaking of Vanessa—please please please please please do Grease Live! It was so good. 🙏 Also, fun fact—even though they did do a Grease 2 (never seen it), they actually had plans to do another Grease with Nsync and Britney. Obviously never happened, but that would've been interesting. Okay, well that was fun. Can't wait to see what you watch next! 🙂

CGoerlich

This is definitely a movie I grew up with and it got weirder and weirder the older I got lol but I still have such a soft spot for this movie. You definitely have to just let a lot of stuff go and not think too hard lol 😆

Jana Fuller

I wanted to say this all through the movie. This is set in the 1950's not in the 1970's. You have to remember in those high schools there are not many black people. Also, Olivia Newton John is an Australian and world icon. She has a couple country albums in the 1990's too. You should check it out. I don't think young people today understood the 1970's exaggerated movies.

Richard

my personal fav thing about this movie is that it’s set in the 1950’s but it feels so 70’s because of when they made it it’s like a bizarre fantasy hybrid-decade..also if you thought this movie was kinda wild the sequel is an absolute fever dream!

Holly

when Sabrina was opening for Taylor she covered Hopelessly Devoted to You, you should look it up! 💕

Allison V

AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH a problematic classic lmao

KioshiWarrior

Suuuch a classic lol

Angelique Juliette

watching this with you has me realizing that i’ve never seen the full movie lmfaooo just the key scenes over the years whenever my mom was watching it

McKenna DeFranco

omg I’m here for the laughs

Lucille

I feel bad for my neighbors because I’m about to belt every song! A childhood favorite of mine

Tomasina Hill

unpopular opinion but i hate this musical...that being said i might rewatch it with you

ariel

Isa Rei
