2020-06-23 09:42:58 +0000 UTCOf course, while he's definitely an asshole, Doan's not a character that's easy to dismiss as "simple" or "one dimensional," because that'd be bullshit, we all know it. He puts up this "tough guy" act, speaks harshly, can be a dick sometimes, but even he has morals that he'll abide by, he's doing things his way because of what life's done to him, to the world... I don't always agree with him, but I do respect Doan as I've learned about him.

Like we're all pretty aware of how terrible it's been, we know a /lot/ of what's transpired and it's all pretty horrendous.... but somehow every /new/ tragedy (of the past or present) only further add to the shit stack that's been building for well over 300 years... I guess it helps to keep stressing the current state of things by always adding another log to the burning fire, to keep adding new perspectives that illicit more sympathy & emotion from the viewers, even if it's something we /should/ expect to have happened (like fact people were murdering kids for food to feed themselves and their kids) but it's still painful to watch nonetheless... I love it that storytelling can make things like this happen, to give us very common & predictable events, and yet still present them in a manner that surprises us!
