The Originals is definitely a VD spinoff, the characters on Originals won't be as impactful if you don't know their VD's backstories. You could watch it standalone but I wouldn't. I would skip it all together tbh, it's not that good imo and I LOVE the characters. But they sort of lose their way and seasons feel very repetitive (to me, sorry stans)
