A “jaunty-step” Chihaya is following the time-worn limestone pavement up to the Kurima Beacon, a remnant of a small lookout with a grand oceanic view. Installed in 1644 by the regime of the Ryukyu Kingdom (yes – Miyako was part of a kingdom back then – isn’t that cool?). The lookout provided for a commanding oversight on the maritime traffic between Kurima and Miyako as well as the less occasional wildfires. It was further extended out by the Imperial Army during the World War II.
She enjoyed being here as much as the Cove, Chihaya thought. The stones touching the soles of her bare feet were cold but felt inexplicably warm at the same time, like radiating the memories of the people who followed these steps long ago. Quietness was in the air, and Chihaya imaged she was in a sanctuary, the overgrown foliage being the pillars and the buttresses. She if wondered her world – her home, her school, her town - would also one day become a beautiful ruin like this one.
