Early Access Video - Black Rat Snake , The Best Pet Snake?

Hi Patrons, Jason here!

1.   Thank you so much for supporting Clint's Reptiles. You guys are amazing.

2.   As you have early access to these videos, please let us know if you catch any mistakes or export issues. They are bound to happen, and I would love to catch them before they get published for the unforgiving world to spot. You are our first line of defense!

3.   Sometimes we need to schedule the release of a video. When that happens, YouTube forces us to change the video status Unlisted to Private. Unfortunately, that cuts off your access. We try to delay this until Friday night (Mountain time zone), so be sure to utilize your early access before then.

4.   I try to get these Early Access Videos uploaded as early as Monday every week. Trying to maximize the early in Early Access Videos :). That doesn't always happen, but that is my goal.

5.   Comments in Patreon = I will see. Comments in YouTube = Clint will very likely see (and sometimes me too).

6.   You guys rock!

I've been thinking of getting a leucistic Texas rat snake. Are their care/handleability/etc about the same as the Black Pine Snake? Are there any notable differences?

Loved the bonus phylogeny at the beginning!

I've got to do some more reading and look into these. I honestly didn't even know they were a thing! Thank you as always for all you do! Also....would you do a video on viper boas? Really want to know what your thoughts are on these beautiful angry guys.

Hey Clint. This is the first time I ever disagreed with you about something. I’ve kept eastern black rat snakes for 25 years at the Cape May Point State Park Nature Center. Ours were all wild caught. All three have made fantastic educational animals. However, I would not give them a five for handling. Some of them are simply too strong for children to handle as they sometimes squeeze too tightly (if the audience is poorly behaved, they really squeeze tightly). As for care, wild caught individuals don’t like to be confined too closely, or they will rub their noses raw on the screen. I keep mine in closet sized enclosures, which give them plenty of opportunity to climb. They are great eaters. Some actually seem to enjoy public interaction, and they are always ready to come out of the cage to explore or be handled once tame. Our original Blackie would voluntarily leave the cage and slither right up my arm. He had safely interacted with several thousand people by the time he died of cancer.

Clint, you are always making me want another snake.

We see these all the time here in Missouri. I've seen plenty of times where they've fallen out of trees and onto some unlucky bystander underneath them(The funniest time into a canoe)

Summer of 2022 Hubby was helping run archery facilities at the largest medieval living history event in the country (Pennsic, Pittsburgh, PA). They store everything in a trailer without the tractor. In the process of pulling everything out they found a massive black rat snake in there. It was removed by an animal loving member who relocated it carefully and safely. Hubby wishes he'd thought it through more and we'd kept the snake safe for the two weeks then returned it to the trailer. Summer of 2023 when hubby was actually in charge of archery facilities he found tons of mouse poo and really wished he had his black rat snake back in there. Since then we got our first snake which was supposed to be my baby, but they're having a bromance. Let's say Hubby is a snake lover now and watching your videos has been part of that process. Waiting for tonight to watch this with him. He's been told and is excited to watch.

Silvermander!

We had one in our house! We had to corall it and get it outside (it was VERY unhappy). I like them in the wild but not in my house. It was black and about 4 ft.

I think I really want a black rat snake. I’ve always wanted a bigger cornie

This is literally my favorite channel ever. We had some really bad snow here the last two weeks and I’ve been stuck at home and rewatched almost every video and watched all of the patreon extras. Now just time to watch all the podcast episodes!
