Kiella is still in the old village as chief but will return soon.
Here is the sneek peek of the chapters.
The hallways of the barracks were quiet, most likely because everyone was already asleep.
I walked carefully, making sure not to make a sound, and headed toward Agnes’s room.
‘I hope she’s still awake.’
Before knocking, I pressed my ear gently against the door.
‘Ah, she’s not asleep.’
After glancing around briefly to make sure no one was watching, I knocked softly.
Knock knock
“Hii! W-Who is it?!”
She must have been muttering to herself gloomily. She was caught completely off guard.
Given the mood she’d been in, I figured a surprise visit might actually cheer her up.
“It’s me.”
Excited, I opened the door without waiting for her reply.
“Dayke?!”
“Oh… I’m sorry. I thought you were feeling down, but it looks like you were enjoying yourself.”
“T-That’s not it!”
Agnes quickly pulled the blanket over herself, completely flustered and unable to speak clearly.
I hadn’t expected this either. My lips froze, and the room fell into an awkward silence, just like the forest earlier in the day.
Before I could say anything, Agnes, still looking down at the floor, quietly spoke first.
“…Why are you here?”
“I thought you seemed upset since yesterday.”
“In that case, like I said this afternoon, you don’t need to worry about it. It’s my own issue to deal with.”
As I suspected, she planned to keep it bottled up.
It didn’t seem like we’d have a proper conversation unless I took the first step.
“Actually, I already know. I know why you’re like this, Agnes.”
“What?”
“Is it because I didn’t contact you even once while I was in the village?”
“…”
She held the blanket tightly and slowly nodded, still avoiding my eyes.
“…Yes. You saw right through me, so I can’t hide it.”
‘How should I comfort her? What would make her feel better?’
I didn’t get the chance to figure that out.
Agnes continued on her own, her voice low, like she had been holding it in for too long.
“I understand everything in my head. I know you had to stay in that village for a long time and that you couldn’t afford to reach out to me because you were dealing with Kiella. There was no reason for you to contact me at all. And I also know that complaining about it would be selfish.”
Her tone revealed how long she had been carrying that frustration.
“But even so, I couldn’t stop feeling weighed down. I kept waiting for you, but thinking that you didn’t even think of me made me… sad.”
“…”
Her face turned red as she recalled the moment I walked in on her.
“But still, none of it helped…”
I realized then that I needed to talk to her properly.
If she had any wishes or grievances toward me, she should feel free to say them. Even if she insisted she didn’t deserve to, the truth was she did.
Because somewhere along the way, Agnes had become something much more to me.
Though I couldn’t quite define it.
I opened my mouth to speak but stopped.
“I’m sorry! I swore I would follow you and pay for my sins, but instead, I made you worry. I won’t let it happen again.”
“There’s no need for that—”
If this was what she wanted so badly… Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to go along with it a little and talk about everything else afterward.
“…Are you really willing to accept any punishment?”
“Yes. An elf knight must take responsibility for her mistakes.”
“Alright. Then I’ll give you a chance to do just that.”
“Thank you! What should I do? I’ll do anything—just say it.”
As I thought about what to ask of her, something she said earlier came to mind.
“You said you were sweating it out in the training room earlier. There’s a place like that in the barracks?”
“The unused warehouse next to the break room was converted into one a month ago. Some of the members wanted a place to train during off-hours or rainy days.”
“I see.”
I looked around the room briefly, then smirked.
“As punishment… let’s go do some physical training.”
"What's wrong? You should continue."
"..."
Agnes hesitated, then moved her upper body back again.
Enjoy!!
