That's a major hang-up for me as well. Anyone who has been in or around academia knows that even those scientists (and other academics) who get regular grants to keep studying aren't living high or well, with the exception of "celebrity" academics. That, in and of itself, negates the major line of reasoning; that these people want to keep themselves fat with grant money. It's just absurd. Maybe -- just maybe -- these thousands of brilliant minds are attempting to sound the klaxon because things are starting to get fucked up.

2017-06-15 22:39:34 +0000 UTCColin, thanks for a great perspective. I graduated with a degree in ecology many years ago and still find the doom and gloom predictions too ridiculous. I agree we can't just fire all the people who work in coal or oil, we just need a plan to transition over time. My main issue is with politicians who repeatedly question science and like you I keep asking myself what hidden agenda could thousands of scientists around the world have?
