Sacred Symbols+, Episode 135: For the Love of Trophies

The PlayStation ecosystem received the Trophy metagame update in the Summer of 2008. And well over a decade later, Trophies are still going strong, though a lot has changed, too. First on PlayStation 3, then on Vita, and then on PS4 and PS5 (though PSP plans were abandoned), Trophies are the tethers that tie generations together, and act as a wonderful 'gaming journal' of sorts, reminding you of where you've been and when in your digital escapades. To get into why Trophies are an important and meaningful silo within the PlayStation ecosystem, I invited Brian English -- proprietor of Trophy guides galore under the famous PS4Trophies and PS5Trophies moniker -- to discuss... well... our love of this singular, endless metagame. Trophies have changed the way the two of us interact with and play games forevermore, and whether that's a good thing or bad thing, it's a thing, nonetheless. So let's discuss, shall we?

My first goal is always to play the game through once without worrying about trophies. Then, if I still enjoy the game afterwards, I'll look at what it would take to get a platinum in it. If I enjoyed the game, but I'm burned out on it, I'll shelve it for awhile and go back for the platinum later. I did that with Danganronpa 1, and now I'm playing Danganronpa 2 over again for its platinum trophy. Some day I'll go back and get the FF13 platinum too. I don't mind that a few games have instant pop platinums, but I try not to seek those games out. If I get one because it looks interesting, I'll just play it on one platform like the Vita. The one that did that recently for me was No Man's Sky. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if instead of giving me an instant platinum, that it would require me to do some of the stuff that they added in later patches, like maxing out the faction quests counts, and fully learning faction languages, instead of making it exactly the same trophy list again. Leave the old high level trophies in, but give me something new. Making Playstation 5 versions of the game have new, more difficult trophy lists seems like a pretty cool idea.

Kaz Redclaw

I'm not crazy about the short Platties.

Colin Moriarty

That's awesome. Keep up the good work!

Colin Moriarty

A really short platinum for an awesome game is Minit. You can get it in a few hours, but there is some challenge to it.

Jeremy Seal

I've used Brian's guides so much during the pandemic. I had 17 Platinums prior to April 2020, and now I have 76 as of now. I think I've earned 23 Platinums last year and 36 Platinums this year as a result of lockdown and the pandemic. Certainly helped me get through it!

Mark ?️

Not for me. =)

Colin Moriarty

Honestly, some of how this trophy obsession has changed the way you two interact with games as a piece of art sounds horrible. The whole idea of planning how to maximise your trophy collection before starting a game rather than discovering them naturally must take away from the enjoyment of surprise?

Mark Whittington

For better or for worse, they're so much easier now.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

They're useful to simply show where you've been and what you've done (and when).

Colin Moriarty

Trophies have turned into journaling for me, basically.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

PSNProfiles weights Trophies.

Colin Moriarty

You never know.

Colin Moriarty

He'll be back.

Colin Moriarty

Please enjoy.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

The hint is in the name.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

This was fantastic! As a trophy hunter myself. I couldn’t agree more that Trophies have become easier. PS3 definitely had tougher platinums( recently platinum Max Payne 3 before the server shut off and it was rewarding)

Rickygreen33

I could honestly listen to Colin and Brian talk about trophies for hours. Great stuff!

Cillian O Connell

Although I don't really hunt for them like I have in the past (as I'm a Level 297 totaling 2,991 trophies with 5 total Platinums) I feel they are important. In my opinion it runs in the same vein as a credit score for gaming.

Aaron Lemmo

I've got a dozen platinums or so - only for games I really enjoyed. The trophy ecosystem becomes annoying, however, when extreme cases fling their Platinum count around on social media for digital clout/e-peen. No one's impressed and it doesn't add anything to your "gamer cred."

Douglas Morreale

I can relate to your OCD with trophies. I used to not play games with bad trophy lists but I went as far as to create a "burner PSN account" that I play games on where I know I can't get the plat. It's mental illness I can't shake!

Sergio Pina

There is, it's called TrueTrophies. Made by the same people. Unfortunately they have much smaller sample sets (fewer users) so sometimes the ratios and numbers can be kinda whacky.

Bobby

Colin, I am not sure is there is something that exist in the PlayStation ecosystem, but in XBox, there is a site called TrueAchievements.com that links your XBox profile and along with tracking and logging your achievements it provides a weighted score for each achievement. I will note that because the achieverments are trophies and not points, like XBox, it is very diffcult to do.

Al Rodriguez

Had to listen to the intro like 5 times. This man has the same name as my dad, but I doubt my dad would know what a trophy is so I’m certain it’s not the same guy

Chris

I would love to see Brian on more content at some point. It was cool seeing the “commiseration.”

Destynee Andrews

Man, been waiting for this to happen. Can't wait to listen!

Joseph Baker

Thanks for this Colin. The best episode of SS+ to date. Love the chemistry between you two. Hopefully we’ll see more of you two together in the future!

Brian Comstock

I think you can change the achievements on XBOX, when Burnout Paradise Remastered came out they completely changed the achievement list on Xbox

Michael Candelaria

OMG! YES! Colin you legend! The hard trophies on the PS5 version 🎮🥂❤️

Troy Walters

Thanks for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much. =)

Colin Moriarty

I love Brian so much, and this is one of my favorite SS+ of the year. Thanks team!

Mitch Krassin

This was such a nice surprise to see on the feed today. Awesome discussion and I hope that Brian will be on in the future. I've been really enjoying the wide range of topics and discussions you've been having on SS+.

Robert Kupfert

He'll be back.

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

Awesome, thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Glad it worked out. =)

Colin Moriarty

I agree, LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Would love this to become a regular feature. Colin, give us Trophy Talk… please 🙏🏻

Ben-Roy

Love you Kati gnight

Omar Amaya

Love trophies. Now I try to platinum a game whenever I buy one, provided if the plat is doable for me

KomakiKhaos

Myself and some friends are basically doing a weighted trophy system, for the last couple of year we've been doing a platinum challenge. The first year was just 'whoever earns the most wins', but this year we came up with a points system. To cut a long story short, any platinum up to 1% is worth 100 points, and it goes down the more common the trophy is. It's really changed how I go for platinums, I now try and go for the tougher one, rather than being put off by the perceived difficulty.

Braden Summers

Just got my 50th platinum trophy thanks to Brian. Thank you so much! Now onto 100 🏆

Walker Simmons

Thanks for the conversation. I’m by no means a major trophy hunter but I do enjoy playing games for trophies when attainable. I find trophies give me a reason to dig deep Into games that I would have no incentive to otherwise. Brian has helped me with that multiple times so thank you Brian

Dave Alvarez

Great episode gents!

Velvet

The Wii U being a disaster is why I dove more into trophies, and I’ll always appreciate them. Like you said, it’s fun to look back at your list from years ago, although I’m not as interested anymore due to Ratalaika and your boys at EastAsiaSoft ruining everything. 🙂

Brandon Soto

as a trophy hunter, there is no better feeling than finding out there is a way to cheese a difficulty-specific trophy that would require a second playthrough

Jacob

=D

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

Me too. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Glad to hear it. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you Brian for my Order 1886 Platinum

Kevin Myers

The occasional dip into trophy talk is one of my favorite parts of SS, was delighted to see this come up in the feed. Great topic, great guest, great conversation; one of my favorite SS+ episodes!

Bobby

Great topic and guest!!!

Zack Apuzzo

God I love trophies.

Robbie Agnew

Oooooh yeah! I've been waiting for this!
