KnockBack, Episode 105: When I Grow Up

The Brothers Moriarty ended up with pretty awesome jobs, one of us in the gaming industry, the other in animation. But it's also true that, in our younger years, we aspired to some other professions. We ultimately found our way towards what makes us happy, but there were deviations along the way, and this week's episode of KnockBack is dedicated to the what-ifs that could have had us doing something totally different with our lives. Colin was nearly a historian; Dagan thought about law enforcement. Colin wanted to go to the stars; Dagan wanted to skate firmly on the ground. Let's chat about what we wanted to be when we grew up, and hear from the audience on the subject, too. Shall we?

Oh I'm a permanent resident now so the days of applying for those permits are long gone, but I do know that while the provisions of trade under NAFTA are dead, NAFTA still persists as far as the movement of labor is concerned (my GF works in immigration law so this isn't outdated info). Work permits for Americans and Mexicans today are still applied through NAFTA , though I wonder if that's slated to change sometime in the future.

Travis Johnson

I wonder if you have to reapply now that NAFTA is dead. =)

Colin Moriarty

Funny enough, the spirit of that guidance counselor lives on. When I moved to Canada three years ago to work in animation my job on the NAFTA permit was classified under Graphic Design, like that's at all related to what I do haha

Colin Moriarty

What’s this Milwaukee bus thing you speak of? I tried looking it up but no idea which one to watch.

Tyler

Glad to hear it! Best of luck to you.

Colin Moriarty

Nice. You've got it all figured out. =)

Colin Moriarty

Hey Guys! I just wanted to say that I really appreciated this whole podcast and is definitely one of the episodes of knockback I'll have to revisit soon. I wanted to thank you specifically for giving me your answers on my question and I wanted to let you both know that your words of wisdom were truly helpful to where I've been in life for the last year. Thanks for the help and advice and not to mention all the outstanding content! I can't wait for next weeks episode of Knockback! Keep up the great work Gentlemen. Sincerely, Smitty

Johnathan Smitty

I got a degree in early childhood studies with a concentration in education, thought I wanted to be an elementary school teacher, then I worked with kids for a year and was like “nope, not doin that.” So then, I decided to apply to work at a mental health rehab center and I’m currently working full time there while going to school to be a recreation therapist. And yes, this type of therapy does involve video games, which can help clients’ improve their physical and cognitive development that might have been hindered by a mental illness or disability early in their life!

Will Hahn

Not so sure there's a market for it! Then again, not so sure there's a market for a brick breaker, either. =D

Colin Moriarty

Glad you enjoyed it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

It probably does. But most of my history learnin' has been done on my own. When you think about it, I was only learning at a collegiate level for four years of my life.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! Really excited to begin our next game. But first: Twin Breaker! =D

Colin Moriarty

That is super cool! Congrats. =)

Colin Moriarty

This is not the right place but I just had an idea while listening to this. The next Sacred Symbols game sould be a Dagan skate boarding game. Great show by the way guys.

Ryan Murdoch

Damn, this episode flew by. This was fun. Can't wait for the next one.

Marcus Brown

Great discussion as always!! Neat topic and a fun listen. These kinda broad nostalgia topics are always some of the more interesting Knockback episodes! Great advice on the college loans as well.

Nick DeBoer

I’m not done with the episode yet but honestly Col I feel like your historian background adds a layer to your career as a video game reviewer/podcaster that other people just don’t have. You dig in to the history of gaming companies, how series are formed/changes etc. it’s fun to hear your reviews because of it. Now you’re a PlayStation historian and a historian via knockback!

Kenneth Oms

This episode was amazing! Glad the chips fell where they did boys or else we wouldn’t have one of the best communities out there! Colin: love hearing about the game design direction I think you’re tailor made for it. Dagan: work with Colin on Dagan Moriartys Pro Skater, Instant Classic!! 😂 see ya next week fellas

Remington James

Congrats, Jake! I’m currently pursuing my MA in History here in Louisiana.

Caleb Greer

I actually ended up getting my MA in history from a Canadian university (since that’s where I live) with a specialization in military history. I regretted my decision to pursue the MA initially, since I kept hearing how unappealing the degree was to prospective employers, but it ultimately was what landed me a job. For the past 9 months I’ve been working as the staff historian at a Consultant Archaeology company. I feel fortunate getting to do the sort of research and historical writing I did back at school—but this time getting paid for the work! It’s a shame that Fireside Chats had to be extinguished, Colin, because I feel as though many of our interests dovetail and we would have had a lot to talk about!

Jake H.

Now that I've done it once, I've got the bug. I'll have more to say on this soon. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. It's a passion!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

You're smart.

Colin Moriarty

So Dagan was right!

Colin Moriarty

Very happy to hear that. =)

Colin Moriarty

That's a tough road!

Colin Moriarty

Please enjoy.

Colin Moriarty

Hearing you express that you want to continue to gravitate more towards developing games has me super psyched. I might be jumping the gun but Colin gameplay design with a Dagan artistic direction would be a dream come true.

Robert Graham

Hey guys great episode and thanks for including my input! I really related to contemplating those "crossroads moments" in life. I find myself revisiting things and remark how I got lucky in some cases or wonder how my life could've been slightly/drastically altered if I had made a different choice or "x" event had never happened. Though, I think I dwell on the past too much and am really hard on myself for making mistakes. Also extra thanks to Dagan for the words of wisdom. They really resonated with me. I look forward to this podcast every week and it always brightens my day.

McBain

Your discussion on space/astronomy is very moving and resonating. Spot on

Caleb Greer

Oh great topic, excited to listen when I get home! Thanks for always giving us something to look forward to. 😁

Captain Canada

When I grow up I want to be Colin Moriarty

Jason Green

Yes! I have a feeling this one is going to be a doozy. And yes. A joey is a baby Kangaroo.

Anthony J Sanchez

Crazy excited about this wave of knockback!

Vaughn Allison

I wanted to test video games. I’m quite happy I got off that road.

Joey Rawlings

Been pumped for this topic! Can't wait to listen on the drive home from work today.
