Constellation, Episode 81 | Would You Rather?, Holiday Gaming, Reading
Added 2024-07-22 16:00:18 +0000 UTC
Welcome back to Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. Today, I (Colin) man the host's chair, and welcome LSM coordinator Micah Moriarty and Virtual Legality's Rick Hoeg to the show for a trifecta of fun inquiries. Micah kicks things off with some "would you rather?" premises that she lifted from a magazine. Don't worry: Nothing perverted! Instead, would we rather see 10 minutes ahead of 150 years ahead? Would we rather be dipped in maple syrup or nutella? That sort of thing. Next, Hoeg hits us with a shorter topic hinging upon gaming, watching films and TV, and so on at certain times of year, during specific holidays, days, months, and so on. Are we calendrical? Finally, I wrap things up by talking about reading books. It's summertime, which means I'm floating around the pool almost every day reading a book for an hour or two. But once the pool is closed, I probably won't read a book until it's open again. Where does reading fit into our lives? And what are some books we've recently read that we'd recommend to the audience?

I knew Colin was rich, but not “pay off your house in 5 years” rich.

@colin watch out, 3 Body Problem (the show), season 1 actually covers many story arcs of the second and especially the third book. Just fyi :)

I also read The Stand for the first time in March 2020.
It’s awesome. The way it depicts the breakdown in society is insane, and basically exactly what would happen.
Like most King books, it sort of falls apart in the final 5%. But the journey is worth it.

Micah speakin on that book you should watch Station Eleven on HBO. It has the whole 99% rate flu.
Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

I’m Team Paperback all the way, but not just for price. I view maintaining a paperback as a show of respect for the book, to not mangle it.

22:39 - Colin sorry to call you out but you used the word persnickety completely wrong. You said “maple syrup is really persnickety in that way”
I think you meant permeating or pervasive. Had to because you call out the homies all the time haha. Cheers mate!

Yeah I feel like we’re all quietly thinking the same thing. I’m not going to call him “scared” but just refusing to participate in the episode over a mature topic is pretty weak.

To counter, bookstores carefully curate and organise the books they display and sell. Bookstores are the platform holders.

Are there too many books? Is it too easy to self publish? Should we have a governing body that just decides what books can and can’t get published? Sounds pretty dystopian and like a terrible idea

Just want to correct Hoeg and warn Colin on the Three Body Problem show. The first season contains events from all 3 books. In fact, the content from the first book is wrapped up half way through the first season.

As someone that games and reads, I always "gateway drug" people with reading by suggesting audiobooks. You don't have to give either one up, I tend to use both for different purposes.

Reading is my favorite hobby, other than video games. I am actually part of a reading group with the primary challenge of "Read 100 Pages a Day" - a variation of the subreddit r/52books that is centered on finishing one book per week. What makes me sad is that there is no literary culture the way that there is a gaming culture. I can find copius, endless amounts of content on YouTube about video games, but comparatively nothing about books. I blame this on the fact that literature has been relegated to purely in the realm of academia. We don't have writers like Hemingway, Steinbeck, etc that are significant cultural figures.
Furthermore, the late writer David Foster Wallace commented a lot about the excessive consumption of entertainment through his '90s novel "Infinite Jest", which can be seen in a worse way now with how much time is spent by the average person on platforms like TikTok.
Less people read because we are all in a constant pursuit of stimulation and pleasure. You could probably elaborate on that point with the alienation of labor some people find working in corporate jobs or poor working conditions that makes the prospect of reading even less worthwhile.

Just saw the reading in the blurb. I'm not sure that you can game and read. There's just too many books. And when you realize you're never going to get through your backlog of books, you discover there's an entire genre of books from the 30's that you want to get through too.
I'm going to have to make a decision soon to either give up gaming and just concentrate on books or vice versa. I'm leaning towards books at the moment.
