Defining Duke, Episode 93 | Did Phil Spencer Tease A New Xbox Console For 2022?

Producer note: We are having significant issues withe the video version of the show due to our recording service. I'm hoping we can get it out later today. Sorry for the delay!

It was a packed week for Xbox. From laying our eyes on Starfield's new dialogue system to a new Xbox console teased by Phil Spencer, there is much to analyze. Joining us for this week's episode is Dad Of Xbox: Jez Corden! He fits like a glove in this episode as much of what we discuss began with his own leaks. As mentioned at the top, Phil Spencer's shelves have struck again and hiding within there is a prototype for what has been codenamed "Xbox Keystone." It is reported that this new cloud device is targeting the $100 price point and will include a controller alongside it. Xbox has gone back to the drawing board multiple times on a cloud prototype, but if Phil's shelf is to be trusted then it seems they're almost there with a working version. We almost comb through the exchanged statements between the CMA and Microsoft in regards to the Xbox-Activision merger. One that the CMA seems to have PlayStation's best interests at heart on. Are their concerns fair? The Dukes dig through the legal documents to find out. Plus more on XCloud Gaming, Starfield, Obsidian's refusal of Fallout, and much more!

Awesome episode as usual

It's so weird you guys think that investigation for the ABK acquisition somehow unnecessary when in 2 years Microsoft spent close to 70B in acquisitions, money close to the net worth of all of Sony(not the PlayStation only), effectively limiting what can be published on PlayStation, I think the deal should go through in the end just that it is a very huge change in gaming as a whole.

Fotis Lyto

A lot of venom for Sony in this episode more than normal, all to their opinion but all the anti British talk from a fellow Brit really hurts me. Well good night all.

Hozi

I appreciate the coarse nature of this show thank you guys for stickin to your guns.

There’s No I in LLC

That’s the point no one know so it is completely speculation if you don’t know the expenditure it is a mute argument.

Garry

Nice constructive criticism. I do want counter you on your conclusions for 2 and 3 First Jim Ryan is a singular individual that happens to be backed by Sony plus you don’t know if he happens to know anyone in the CMA personally and a lot of the times corrupt people get away with things. What I’m basically trying to get at is you don’t know how corrupt or not corrupt the UK gov or the CMA are unless you will admit you work for them and can vouch for their credibility which doesn’t really matter to me since I don’t know. Just cause someone has not reported any corruption in the CMA doesn’t mean there isn’t any. Now I agree with you that people are not stupid but generally people can just be clueless in certain areas they don’t have a interest in no matter how intelligent or reasonable they are. My personal opinion I believe barely none of those people play games or deal with game businesses after all the games industry is rather knew compared to other things that’s why loot boxes (basically slot machines) get away being sold to kids while there is a rule that kids can’t play at casinos at lease in real life casinos. Now as you mentioned CMA conclusions being “very close to some of the points Sony has made” does make them look like they copy Sony’s homework. While anything Microsoft mention has been wave away like it doesn’t matter. It’s showing that CMA has bias whether that is them being swayed by Sony or what I reckon is most likely is they just see trillion dollar Microsoft picking on the smaller company Sony. They are going off company size rather then gaming business size. Anyway have a good day dude and have fun playing games this weekend.

Ultimatley it doesn't matter when The Xbox division itself it turning a higher *profit* than ever before.

I love everyone on the panel but the hosts need to temper the conclusions they draw from a regulatory body wanting to continue to investigate a merger. Here are some of the conclusions drawn by the panel. 1. The UK government is seeking to somehow renegotiate multi billion dollar hardware and software deals with Microsoft therefore they are having an independent board prolong their investigation. As far as I know the current government has not even appointed anyone to the CMAs board, seems dubious to make accusations of corruption like this. Not to mention those existing contracts with Microsoft were negotiated years ago. Just like Microsoft will honor deals made between Activision and Sony because breaking them would entail fines and lost credibility I'm sure the UK government will honor their contract with Microsoft and vice versa. Both parties probably are unable to renegotiate terms will-nilly. Seems far fetched and a massive conclusion to make from an independent regulatory board wanting to continue their investigation. 2. That Jim Ryan, as one singular individual, has been able to corrupt the process that has been put in place since the CMA was created in 2013. This seems pretty far fetched especially when there's been no reporting of any kind. Best not accuse a government agency or executive of corrupting a legal process in one of the least corrupt counties in the world (UK) without some reporting on this happening. 3. That the intelligence of the individuals performing the investigative work is deficient (the CMA is stupid). I think the only thing that needs to be said about this is a classic Hoeg Law line, reasonable minds can differ. While some of the conclusions the CMA makes seems to be a little strange and very close to some of the points Sony has made these points were not made to stop the deal they were made as justification to continue their investigation on to a second more scrupulous phase. I think before insulting peoples intelligence we should think logically about what people are doing. Anyway, I could go on but I think the point has been made. It's not to slander the hosts or to insinuate anyone is stupid or dumb. I just think this is such a monumental and huge deal that it begets a lot of speculation and excessive conversation. I think everyone needs to step back and think about what they are saying, the conclusions they are drawing, whether those conclusions are reasonable to a reasonable mind and has some internal logic that can be grasped. Please be kind. Enjoy your video games. Looks like a great weekend for some gaming ahead (any weekend).

"Could easily".. so you clearly don't know either.

Stonehorn

What are they talking about 2.9 billion means nothing unless we know how much there expenditure is each year with the amount of studios they own the could easily be spending that .

Garry

Man JezDD is one letter away from disaster

Gabriel Baker

Great episode guys, Jez was great as always. We need to get Jez and Colin on a pod together where they can talk about the profitability of GP, would be a fascinating listen.

Andrew McGregor

Dustin is on an absolute tear across all these podcasts as of late

NotSkyWalker

And now I might add, #JezDD - His whole bit talking about gamepass profitability, sustainability, and how the team has approached its gradual roll-out was some appreciated insight

NotSkyWalker

You guys got to get King back on here!

Tonys_Always_Write

This ep sounds so funny, I'm going to watch the video even after listening to the audio version!

Every human has a bias viewed. You're whining too much.

Grow up, you sound like an idiot child.

Stonehorn

Dude they can have on whoever they want it’s called creative freedom. Colin has on controversial guests too if you don’t like it don’t listen to it my dude.

J Train

How can they get someone on who is biased as a Xbox fanboy but yet Matty says he doesn't deal with fanboys. What happened to journalism, Colin would never stoop this low. It's seriously making me question my Patreon subscription, when you hear this repetitively. It's not PlayStations fault why they're number one, Xbox need to look at themselves for that!! A deal of this magnitude was always gonna go to the next stage of scrutiny

Zack Fair

I didn’t agree before but it felt like that today .

Pianopower

Why is it that Defining Duke is becoming a place to shit on PlayStation all the time, I wasn't aware that this show was jez cordons or colt eastwoods twitter. Matty says he's not a Xbox fanboy but he certainly caters for them here

Zack Fair

Thumbnail game is at an all time high.

redwingcody

Jez always a welcomed guest! Looking forward to listening
