Sacred Symbols+, Episode 258 | The Callisto Protocol Review Discussion and Spoilercast

Last month, a long-awaited survival horror game launched on PS5 (and elsewhere) in the form of The Callisto Protocol. Led by Dead Space and Call of Duty veteran Glen Schofield's new studio Striking Distance, Callisto was at first envisioned as a project set in the PUBG universe. It ultimately found its way towards being something of its own, though, and the result has been undoubtedly divisive. Yet, we here at Last Stand Media kinda-sorta like this game, at least more than the general consensus, and we're here to say: Yes! The Callisto Protocol is deeply flawed, but also the beginning of something potentially awesome. It's -- as we say time and time again on this episode -- a title that's almost there. Indeed, it's akin to The Order: 1886. And in an environment rife with the same-ol' repetitive nonsense, than in and of itself is a notable feature.

Very annoying.

When will they just let you play audiologs during gameplay. Bioshock figured this out in 2007

There’s No I in LLC

The first sentence seems valid, it pauses the game and forces the tutorial in your face yet nobody seems to have absorbed the information. Not sure why you thought I wasn't being nice? 🤔 Zero vitriol or animosity in my comment. It was just an observation. Enjoyed the episode overall.

Thanks! It’s a shame, it started off well for me but it was death by a thousand cuts in terms of weird game design decisions etc, I do think they’re almost there tho - if there is a sequel then I’ll definitely give it a look, maybe when it’s really cheap or on PS plus I’ll go back to it, who knows?

David D

Now imagine if you removed the first sentence, and were nice.

Colin Moriarty

awesome

Brannon H

Thank you. =)

Colin Moriarty

I agree. Comparing it to Dead Space was, in hindsight, a disservice.

Colin Moriarty

I'm sorry you didn't like it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. I agree.

Colin Moriarty

As noted, it was delayed. And disastrously, because it missed the GotY window and caused some controversy.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

I'm gonna wait and see what they do before financially committing to more.

Colin Moriarty

We'll try and do as many episodes of games we've collectively played, no doubt.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

So nobody read the tutorial that is shown on screen of how to dodge? Ben seems to have it right in his mind. There is NO timing. Only hold left or right and then alternate side for the next attack. The accessibility Colin mentions just allows you to hold one direction the entire time.

Glad you guys talked about this. I liked this game up until the tram ride, then it kind of fell apart. The monotony sets in and the flaws become apparent. It's definitely the direction I'd like to see more games take though, even if it fails in execution. Nice to hear others reaching a similar conclusion.

I liked this game, I haven’t listened yet but this game kept screaming Doom 3, Resident Evil, and some Dead Space but only the setting and mood, not so much the gameplay. Like it does have some Dead Space mechanics but Callisto feels tighter and more closed up if that makes sense. Idk, I had a great time with it and really didn’t understand the super low scores that some gave it. Hoping to see a current-gen only sequel with less shimmying though. LOL

Great spoilercast, and glad to hear people are enjoying Callisto. Unfortunately I really didn't like it, like I'd probably say it's around a 4 for me in terms of enjoyment, I only finished it playing in intervals of 15 mins or so since I hated playing it so much😂 I do respect what it's going for in terms of a more manageable AAA-lite experience and I think a sequel could iron some of the issues I had which others have gone into. On the positive side, I spent €70 for Callisto and traded it in against PSVR2 for €55, so it was only really 15 euro for me in the end, it was worth it for that, even if I hated it near the end!

I liked this game, I haven’t listened yet but this game kept screaming Doom 3, Resident Evil, and of course Dead Space from start to finish and I had a great time with it. Hoping to see a current-gen only sequel with less shimmying though.

While you are correct. The only reason it was released in December was because it was delayed out of September.

I need scissors! 61!

One of my favorites in some time. I’m completely in line with the team’s thoughts on the quality of the game. What I like about the episode is that not every game needs to be huge triple A affairs to warrant discussion. This along with Trails and Crisis Core (two games I don’t even want to play but enjoy hearing about) seem like a great trend.

Colin you mentioned, just sort of rhetorically, that 10 years ago nothing like this would have come out in December. In terms of the interesting time of release that has some type of magnitude. Far Cry 3 was released in December 2012, ten years ago :) An exception which proves the rule :)

Great to have Ben back, he was a great addition, and he didn't have amnesia like the Horizon spoiler-cast xP.

I liked this game a lot. I am a bit afraid it is going to get forgotten about with the big remakes coming out. It reminded a bit of the first resident evil how the story is a bit of a mystery, but it slowly unravels and reveals itself. Great spoilercast. Might be the first time in a long time I buy the season pass.

Mitchell Lundsberg

Really enjoyed listening to this even though I didn't play it. Hearing y'alls opinions on a game with lukewarm reception is something I'd like to hear y'all do more.

Brannon H

Really glad you guys gave this game a truly critical assessment and not just an emotional dismissal like many others did.
