Sacred Symbols+, Episode 317 | Twisted Metal (Peacock) Review Discussion and Spoilercast (Season 1, Episodes 1-2)

Earlier this year, we had a blast covering each and every episode of HBO's The Last of Us here on Sacred+. We thought we'd try to do this again for Peacock's newly-released Twisted Metal series, though we're not going to go quite as aggressively. Instead, we thought we'd digest the first two episodes, see how we felt, and uncover if we even wanted to continue at all. And we do. Two upcoming editions of + will cover episodes 3 through 6 and 7 through 10. For now, though, let's focus on the first hour of Twisted Metal, introducing ourselves to John Doe and his lovely car Evelyn, a quiet (!) female companion, the notorious Sweet Tooth, and the so-called COO of San Francisco, played by Neve Campbell. Sometimes funny and sometimes not -- but solid, nonetheless -- Twisted Metal's unexpected return in television form isn't must-see TV. But it still may be worth watching, depending entirely on your disposition and expectations. (Please note: We discuss a key plot point of the season that doesn't occur in these first two episodes. This is done for clarity's sake; if you're worried about being totally unspoiled after the first two episodes, avoid this podcast. But in our opinion, this 'spoiler' should come as no surprise if you're familiar with the source material.)

Colin just spoils the finale with no care or warning in this even though it is just for episodes 1-2

FunkyTone

I kinda felt like it was supposed to be intentionally campy. But maybe I just have too much of a "I want to like this" mentality going into things lol

Josh Gamez

Colin, I know you don't drive but how many 20 years old (and given the overall look of it, it's probably closer to 30) year old cars have you been around that aren't at times excessively loud? Even in a world with regular tune ups and part replacements it's hard to avoid. I could only imagine how impossible it'd be in the post-apocalypse lol.

Josh Gamez

I thought this was about the entire first season but it's about the first few episodes and I am disappointed because this show isn't some amazing ass show but it's funny and entertaining. Nothing wrong with not feeling it and bouncing out but it gets pretty good in my opinion. And for the record I grew up not playing these games except at friends houses. This kinda gave me Shawn of the dead levels of humor.

A-Scythe

Thanks for pointing that out because I knew he was quoting something else…

Napoleon in Rags

This reminds me of the American Horror Stories show in that it’s not great or even that good, but entertaining enough to pull you into the next episode…

Napoleon in Rags

Col, that quote isn’t Oppenheimer’s originally. It’s from “Bhagavad Gita” by Vyasa, which is also mentioned in Nolan’s film. I’m with Dustin on this one. The show is ehh after having watched the first 3 eps.

NeO JD

I came out liking this show way more than I expected. However I did think a lot of the humor fell flat in some of the earlier episodes. I did find the world and characters intriguing.

Trapgunner

Some Peacock shows are weekly and some get dropped all at once. I wonder how they make the distinction internally.

Zackery Parkerson

I second this. I know there are some people who haven't finished, but there could have been a better, thorough discussion had you guys just sat through all 10 episodes and talk about it that way. Doesn't help that you both seem to already know about things that happen in the last two episodes. So...why not just cover the whole show? Made the conversation feel super disjointed.

SpectreBull

Went into it with no expectations and came out really satisfied with the show and hoping they get a second season.

Michael Buffill

They are both, taking the show too seriously when the maps bother them. Lol

Angel DeJesus

The isn’t HAHA funny. But it is definitely fun. I have fun watching it even though it’s not great. And the characters have grown on me. Give me a second season.

Kendrick Calles (Ca-Yes)

Thanks for the catch! This has been fixed.

Dustin Furman

I Don't need this to be a write in or anything, but the word is steward, not Stewart (or Stuart, whichever your preference is), Dustin. Or is that that Midwestern, west side Penn accent I'm hearing. Nevertheless, I've heard it the last few episodes when you've spoken this word.

Aaron B Vick

I was really enjoying the first 10 minutes.. Then we moved on to Twisted Metal

Scott

I was pretty whatever on it in the beginning, but they had me by the last episode. Really fun show.

Jimmy G

I think you guys should finish watching the show.

Michael Mashpotato

Didn’t even know the show came out.

Hammertime44

Really enjoyed hearing your takes on the first 2 episodes. Can't wait to hear more discussions about this series in the coming weeks!

Real Radec

David mentioned he doesn't really care about being in the credits when there was the discourse regarding credits on The Last of Us, if I recall correctly. Also, kind of funny to end on the credits issue, and then the closing of the episode leaves out all the names at the Producer level.

Jason Bolla

Great timing, I just watched the first 2 episodes last night! For a show that got so much negativity (understandably)in the build up to release, I'm quite enjoying it so far. Just a fun watch where you can switch your brain off and enjoy it. Guess it helps that there were basically no expectations, but still.

Deemac

I binged it over 5 days last week. Really liked it. I could see why stuck up reviewers wouldn't, but that's not me.

Angel DeJesus

You guys should at least get to the episode with Bloody Mary. She is the best acted character, imo, and makes for a great watch

Ray

Yeh it kinda sucks we don’t have it yet I assumed as Sky have Peacock we would’ve got it Day 1. I reached out to Sky and they said they haven’t got a date to as to when we’ll get it.

Mitun M

The wife and I started this Saturday night and finished Monday night. We thought it was really great.

Michael Mashpotato

Oh this will be handy to see what the shows like as it’s not available in the uk yet.

Wayne Moss

Stand down.

Meatball

This is ... Better than The Last of Us.... Don't come for me
