I think one reason to draw out the execution of Ace is that he's also a hostage. Whitebeard cannot use his entire power because he would risk killing Ace, too. If it was just for revenge, Whitebeard could just easily sink entire islands from a distance. So they kinda had to draw him out and and get him into a range where they can fight him by letting Ace live long enough and also by giving Whitebeard a time limit long enough so he was able to make it to Marineford in time.

I feel like Amenz is forgetting that Ace and Luffy are the kids of the two most wanted criminals in the world. He can't just hang around and raise them, or take them to some respectable place to have them be raised. He's trying to hide them from the world, so he can't just adopt Ace and bring him home.

Garp is probably the most famous Marine ever in One Piece. Him turning his back on the marines for Ace would be a huge blow to the world in terms of the publics belief in what the government stands for.

Eh this Garp stuff lol. I mean Amenz's Garp comments, I don't agree with him but he's free to feel that way. I get why he feels that way but I'm not feelin it. Like, let's be real here. In the previous 1-2 episodes Garp dropped Ace off and told Dadan to raise Ace, he then dropped Luffy off and said he'll be there with Dadan and Ace. It's clear he's that Grandpa who lives his own life and has others raise the kids and that's true because he's a grandpa. Most grandpas aren't in their kids lives each day and they see them every once in a while. Garp fits that as well. Just because you're not there constantly doesn't mean you can't be their grandpa, it just means you have your own life to live. He's a big shot in the navy and he's always proud of shilling his grandkids when they do something amazing. The only time he wasn't is when this Ace stuff happened and then he got upset because he truly does love these kids. If he didn't love them he wouldn't be as upset as he is. That's love. I think a big indicator is Ace and Luffy's opinion towards Garp. No matter what Ace did to start this nobody is mad at Garp at all and that in itself says that they consider Garp as their grandfather who loves them. Garp can be mad at Ace and Luffy, Ace can be mad at himself but Garp's always on their good side because they know who he is as a character and that character is a grandfather who truly does love them but, as known, he's a grown man who lives his own life as each of them live their own lives. Parents cannot steer their children into their profession no matter how much they love them if their kid doesn't wanna do it. Even if Garp wanted them to be marines, he could have been there each day and they still wouldn't have wanted it because it's not them. We can't be saying Garp didn't do enough because of that. Come on now lol. Still even if I disagree I love the fact yall are so passionate about OP that you're willing to say your opinions and theories like this. Even if I and others might disagree, that goes above any disagreements. One love fam!

pretty sure if garp helped ace escape from prison or in this war the navy would execute everybody associated with garp like Coby for example. Garp has friends in the Navy that are not bad people and he is protecting them by staying in the Navy at least that is what i always thought

They didn't execute him as soon as he arrived because that would sully the Navy's name: to resort to cheap tactics and broken pacts. They were also trying to showcase their power - it was a public spectacle for propaganda purposes to try to end the Great Age of Pirates. If they simply killed Ace, there's nothing to stop Whitebeard from simply going on a rampage and wrecking the Marines while they're scattered. Concentrating their forces, and having Ace as a hostage was their best hope to take him down and avoid an extremely devastating war against a foe who was said to have the power to destroy the world, and who might well have simply destroyed Marineford outright without offering battle in the first place.
