Many a truth is spoken in jest, and Douglas Adams was a very smart man

So the Hitchhiker's Guide wasn't that far off when it mentioned using leaves as currency?

Programmable Spacecraft

Agreed. About on par with people living in the Sahara Desert using sand as currency

Thinking about asteroids and gold made me remember the libertarian wet-dream webcomic "Escape from Terra" on the Big Head Press site. It was full of magical stuff, but the bit that really broke my suspension of disbelief was the fact that all the "belters" paid for everything in gold dust. I believe micrograms of it. Really? When the "waste" product of your average nickel/iron astroid will be enough gold to equal the current world output from mining? (Let alone all the metals in the platinum group.) Science Fantasy, not Science Fiction.
