2024-12-25 19:02:39 +0000 UTCI'm the first to usually say people need to drop their hype over Oda regarding his writing, because he does falter in a lot of aspects. But to say Oda doesn't write women as well as he could because of something like 'his own culturally bound chains' is just wildly inaccurate and also disrespectful to him as a writer. Don't get me wrong his art designs could definitely use work because he either draws Nami or Alvida, theres no inbetween, but when it comes to characterization and writing hes written several women very well, not the least of which is Big Mom, Pudding, Robin ect. Just because he doesn't touch on the subject of female opression or the patriarchy does not mean that the women in his series aren't as written as well as they could be, in fact jumping into that subject would make them far lesser characters, because its an extremely overdone subject.

They literally had no shot at growing up to be decent since they have no ability to feel empathy or compassion. Reiju feels emotions, but they still seem muted since she was confused why Sanji wouldn't just let his mentor die to save himself.

He still treats most women, once again recognizing the trans-woman failing here, with respect and goes out of his way to protect or provide for them; this is seen with how he treats kids and older ladies in most side adventures.

2024-12-25 03:49:21 +0000 UTCbut it's not developed as good as it could be because Oda himself is not a strong enough writer to break his own culturally-bound chains (e.g. he is clearly capable of designing a wide-array of women characters but typically doesn't, or when he does he typically makes them a part of some greater joke, because it's genuinely really hard for a man to have that level of introspection when they're part of the normal of their society, at least from what I've seen. The only time I've seen really well-written and critical women written by men is by trans or gay men who, do to their circumstances, have little-to-no chance of fitting in with the cultural norm.)

They're a tragic case, if not as much as Sanji, but after becoming adults, and getting freedom, they could have decided at any moment to disregard/abandon their father. But they chose not too because they had comfortable lifes. Reiju is the one of his siblings who clearly did make that choice, albeit on a more subtle level, going along with the fact that she was never a favored child like the three sons. She may have been the test case, and may have the same innate strength as the other three, but she's still a woman and bound by that, given how patriarchal the dad is. It's an aspect of her character that I've always felt is unintentional intentional. As in, in writing her, Oda is hitting on something very true about most societies

2024-12-24 22:35:19 +0000 UTCAgain, I feel like Sanjis backstory suddenly puts the way he is always trying to take care of the younger/younger feeling crewmates (Usopp and Chopper) in a whole new light/Tells us exactly why he is like that. Bet he often wished someone would look out for him. I vaguely remember the sheer hype I felt the first time I read the chapter of Luffy just eating the biscuits in the Manga. It is like the entire story had build to that moment. Very much the same feeling as when he met Enel. Rubber is the natural counter to lightning and Luffy is the natural counter to biscuits.

Also, as much as I want to hate Sanji’s brothers, their father is the one who literally built them to be psychopaths. He is probably the worst dad in One Piece.

(3 women with the maid) Zeff only "activated" that in sanji: treat the woman nice because those were the ones who treat you well That stuck in sanji's head since then, chavelry and all, yes, but add that together and he would prefer to die than hit a woman
