ngl, it does bother me a bit when southern accents are associated with being stupid, but it's one of those things that it's just so common that I don't usually actually say something about it (clarifying I dont have much of a southern accent, but I live in a place with a lot of people who do. I think part of the reason it's upsetting is because the same way people associate the accent with stupidity, many associate the south as a whole with stupidity [growing up it was a cliche that any time a southern state was on they news they'd seemingly only interview the most backwoods redneck people they could find, furthering that assumption]). But yeah, it's definitely incorrect to say that making fun of it is racist. Classist or prejudice, maybe (some people really do feel pressured to learn to not use their accent so they are taken more seriously), but not racist.

It’s not about a specific accent, the use of rural accents to mock people has been common around the world and throughout history. I tried to leave out specific references to a singular culture or place because of that. But, i also agree with you that’s it’s a part of comedy, I think it almost always has been.

Aye, it's still casual discrimination against an entire group of people. It's just one of those things where some types of discrimination remain socially acceptable and others don't. All that changes is who gets to say what is and isn't okay. But it's never the relevant groups that have a say in it, keep that in mind.

I think people are misguided in their criticism of your use of that accent, and to qualify it as racism isn't technically right as you said. But the use of "hick sounding" accents to indicate stupidity for humor has its roots directly in both racism and more relevant here- classism. "People that talk like this are/sound out of touch and stupid and are probably poor" is what people convey and its been targeted at immigrants and country folk for ages and in many ways has caused harm. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, and I think how people were criticizing you over it were mostly incorrect. But that whole style of humor has its roots in the humiliation and degradation of social groups, I hope that helps you better understand why some people were upset

I don't like SpongBob's standup anymore, all he does these days is talk shit about squirrels and whine about being "canceled" even though he keeps getting specials at the Komedy Krab. And don't even get me started on that time he unironically played the "I had a friend who's a squirrel" card as a shield against criticism--as a sponge himself you'd think he of all people would understand how bigoted that is.
