I was looking for a good story with well written characters (decently at least) not to self-insert myself in a D&D wet dream where I turn out to become a hyper mega ultra chad. I'll drop it and leave it to those who enjoy that, definitely not my thing.

Power fantasies where the MC is strong and virtuous and gets the attention of others for how nice and powerful they are, sell a lot. Then pair that with a world that operates on MMO logic and, assuming the art is appealing and it has a strong start that pulls people in (like SAO and now Solo Leveling), it'll be a hit. No, I'm not eternally spiteful that these types of things took the spotlight away from .hack, why would you ever say that?

There's a story, sure, and it's not a bad one per se, but it's not the main reason most people love it. But I get that's not everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine. Just know it was never trying to be what you seem to have expected from it. Anywho, have a great time nonetheless, and I do hope there's something else for you this year!

I'm currently watching Made in Abyss and Dororo as well and boy do they put this to shame. They make me wonder why I'm still wasting my time with it. You can't trust other people's hype...

It ends up looking more generic simply because he has the more stereotypical protag look. Idk, its hard to say how they could have showed that any differently without simply not doing it at all and having the str increase just be more "Magical".
