I think you're on the right track with your theory about why Teach could still be hurt as a Logia. This is just a theory, but Logia users tend to have a weakness that solidifies them. For Crocodile it was water, and for Enel it was rubber. I suspect that for Teach, it's light, and since he's being illuminated, his body is forced to remain solid. If he were in a dark space, however, I think he would be able to operate as any other Logia user.
