I love how Kirito could have told everyone the dead guy was a beta tester and the move wasn't in the beta to save himself from guilt but instead, he decided to burden the hate so no one takes it out on the man who just passed......thats a good guy

It got published a little over ten years ago, but the light novels were adaptations of volumes that Reki Kawahara wrote starting in the early 2000s. So at the time the Aincrad story (the first part of the anime) was written, it was set 20-ish years in the future. Considering the trends in gaming at the time it was written, the idea of immersive VR gaming within 20 years was only slightly in the realm of science fiction (mainly the part where it is fully immersive mind-linked VR). Considering that VR headsets are now available to the general public and are getting cheaper every year, I'd say that 2042 would have been a far safer bet, though I doubt we'll be at full mind-immersing VR like this even then without some major breakthrough in medical neuroscience to go along with it.
