There is a major difference between your run of the mill medieval ruling family cousin/2nd cousin incest and brother sister marriages for the purposes of blood purity. To try and label the two as equivalent is beyond comprehension. And yes there is an essentially “perfect” house in Oldtown who have ruled for millennia of peace and prosperity from Oldtown before the Targaryens arrived. Center of learning, trade and religion and a culture more modern and civilized than any other in Westeros. There really isn’t a house that can compare to House Hightower in terms of the “good” they have done for the realm. “We light the way” indeed. when i first watched this show, at this point in the story i had already kind of fallen in love with dany’s character and to a lesser extent, the targaryens as a concept. as simple as it is, i really was just fascinated by their connections with dragons and the mysterious magic that cements that union. upon learning more about their lore, i was kinda conflicted because they def aren’t good people as a collective, but as characters in a story they’re j so epic. they’re so interesting and entertaining, and i don’t think they’re unambiguously bad on a person to person basis. i also think their situation offers an interesting perspective on blood lines and stuff like that because the story explores the importance (or arguably lack thereof) of bloodlines, yet being a dragon rider is absolutely dependent on the presence of targaryen blood. tldr: targs are pretty sick, dragon go brr 🫡

That post discussion of HOTD first viewers is so interesting because you guys are probably one of the only few people (far less reactors) who would have watched HOTD before GOT. Watching GOT for the first time I was interested in the Targs because of the idea of dragons. Coming from HOTD you guys already know of how dangerous and fantastical dragons are and even seen one of the Mythic OGs (Vhaegar), so the Targs may not be as interesting to you guys as they were to people like me. The thing is though, the way they tell GOT is just on a much more grande scale than HOTD. HOTD is a contained story but GOT is an entire universe and has infinitely more lore, way beyond dragons (so far at least) than HOTD.

The Hill Tribes in Westeros are basically Wildings who were living South of the Wall when it was built. The Wildings and the Hill Tribes are both descended from the First Men, who were the first wave of humans to settle Westeros. And so are the majority of the noble houses and small folk of the North. A great deal of the rest of Westeros is populated by the Andals, the second wave of men who migrated to Westeros. In the Vale (the area where Catelyn’s sister resides) the ruling Houses are almost all made up of people who descended from the Andals. They defeated the First Men who resided there. And the Hill Tribes consist of many of those people who were defeated by the Andals. So they would love to get what Tyrion was offering them; the ability to get control of the Vale back from the men who conquered them and drove them into the hills in the first place. That is why Tyrion taunted them by saying that they hide in the hills and shiver when the Knights of the Vale ride past.

I will say in terms of comparing Team Green to the Lannisters I feel like it’s apples and oranges. At least the Lannister’s are clearly competent, ruthless, strive openly for power, and have a certain “je ne sais quoi” about them. The Hightowers on the other hand are either misguided or annoying (Alicent), a pathetic rage monster (Criston), lifelong schemer (Otto), and a weak mommy’s boy king (Aegon). Tywin alone projects more strength and backbone than all of team Green.

Viserys from Hotd is Aegon the conquerors great-great-grandson. The events of that show are about 100+ years after Aegon’s conquest (when the iron throne was first formed) and the targs had held the throne for 280 years until Robert’s rebellion finally overthrew them properly. I think the throne definitely corrupts a lot of those who sit up, it’s the whole “absolute power corrupts absolutely” thing. There’s definitely been good kings but there’s also been more bad kings and that’s often on account of the power getting to them and those around them, plus the targaryens being seriously inbred doesn’t help since it means that a lot of them are insane.

I recommend you guys watch “The Wire” at some point. It was written/created by a crime journalist, based on the true stories of the narcotics trade he witnessed in Baltimore. It was made in the early 00’s yet it’s still relevant today. It’s on par with Breaking Bad for me as one of the greatest TV series of all time.

Targaryens are the best house hands down. I watched GoT first, and instantly loved the Targaryens. their lore is unparalleled, and I think what draws a lot of watchers/readers in are the Targaryens themselves.
