Code Geass is my top 3 fav anime. One of the rare animes that is just good all the time and never disappoints. Glad to see you enjoy it, it has some of the best tropes. Initially I was not a fan of mecha but it becomes a detail almost in the show. The pacing makes for great rewatchability, it does go slower after this but the fights are always this fast paced. Dub is inferior as always.

Tbh with you I've never liked a show where I wasn't interested atleast 3 episodes in but somehow you're still giving CG a chance lol. The hype for Code Geass is strictly from 1. How each Season is completely different yet still consistently good. 2. Final closing episodes always being the best episodes. 3. The ending of the show and the claim that it's one of the best in anime which isn't too controversial, honestly asking if it's the best of OAT is more up for discussion. If for any reason you do like Geass after S1 or S2 that's fine, if you don't that's fine also, but If so I recommend spoiling yourself so you don't have to satisfy that itch of missing out. Being spoiled might even make you interested in the show to figure how story came to that point. Anyways I hope you enjoy the show this time.

Kuroko no basketball is good but for me personally it’s not on Haikyuu level, it’s missing two things in its storyline that majority of sports anime actually don’t invest in much for it to be considered above average for me when it comes to sports anime in general & because it’s missing these things, KnB is just another cool shonen anime with power up like movements & has cool characters here and there. That’s it. It doesn’t have the depth that Haikyuu has with its characters and most importantly it doesn’t dive into the reason why many people around the world are very passionate or driven about sports in general, not many sports anime explores this story wise ( which is shame ) besides Haikyuu and a few older series like Slam Dunk, Chihayafuru, Hajime No Ippo etc.

@Mamox I think the over theatrical part of it is intended. It seems like Code Geass very much sees itself as a tragedy in the Shakespearean sense (you can tell that even just in the first episode tbh), and a lot of the elements are very similar to that structure - from certain narrative tropes and the dialogue to themes, etc. Most of the complaints I hear about it are addressed if you look at it from that perspective. In your case, Shakespeare is obviously very over the top and dramatic, and it even has certain story cliches where for example it has a lot of dramatic irony or where things go wrong at just the right moment. Some people say that's bad writing but hey, Shakespeare did it haha, embrace it! xD That's just the story it's trying to tell.

death note was great, but the second half was a worse and its not something I liked so much I wanted to go back and watch it over and over like I do with some other shows (AOT, one piece, full metal, HxH, mushoku tensei, re zero, berserk, juju kaisen etc. just some of my favorites) but ive never been super into mecha anime or anime in the style of code gaess, i could get past that, Ive enjoyed mecha anime before - but watching it also it felt a bit...over theatrical? cheesy? unbelievable? idk. hard to explain. When they finally released a movie over a decade later that cleared the mystery, I SCREAMED and said, "I told those assholes on those forums all those years ago! We were right!" Sub is always the safe bet. You’ll never have any issues. Dub is situational and works for certain anime like cowboy bebop, DBZ and FMAB, but other than that it shouldn’t be so controversial to choose. This show is heavy on information so it’s a lot to retain but once they find their flow, it’ll be smooth sailing. Just let it ride guys, we’ve all seen these shows already so it’s up to the Geks how they want to experience it their first time. I'm piling on at this point, but there is zero reason to watch Dub over Sub if you're capable of reading subtitles and following along. The original audio will ALWAYS be better than any dubbed version, not to mention that Japanese VAs are on average much more talented and suited at this kind of work, you can feel the passion and care in their voices. For whatever reason, this just utterly fails to translate for English VAs. Even the more GOAT'd dubs like Stein;s Gate and Death Note don't compare to their sub counterparts. Something is lost, because to me it just sounds cringe when the VAs try to hit the same notes. Or maybe it's all just confirmation bias since Japanese audio is what I started Anime with.

They still have to match the lines to the mouth flaps, which sometimes leads to awkward, broken up sentences. Plus the talent pool of voice actors in Japan is very competitive, so the actors selected for shows tend to be very talented and good fits for their roles. Finally afaik dubs in US are done in individual booths, but in Japan the actors are in a room together during recording, meaning that they can react and match their Co-actors way better

sometimes it's also about compatibility, the dub voice actor or actress can be good themselves but they might not voiced it in the intended direction or vision made by the directors which is directly involved in the whole production of the anime from casting the right voices for the characters to how expressive a line should be.

Yea I don't really understand why you wouldn't try the dub of the show in your language, then if that isn't good switch to the sub. That should be the default so the dub vs sub convo doesn't continue after they've tried both and choose one.

honestly although fmab dub is very good and one of the best of all dubs out there... you could tell the boys overall opinion and thoughts on the show were watered down a bit since they ended up catering to the crowd of dub enthusiasts. its very likely they would have enjoyed it more watching it like any other normal anime they do on the channel in sub, and wouldnt have had as much of a "did not meet the high expectations" outlook at the end. so with that said we have the same situation here... just stick to the sub its already great anyways. if any of you really want to check out the dub you can look at clips or rewatch it later in dub to see the difference

People really overreacting about subs, a lot of us watched this show as children and survived just fine. The first couple episodes are way more fast paced than the rest of the show, it’ll be fine after a few more.

They are constantly talking over the show due to the nature of being a reaction channel with 5 people all watching together. Having subs allows them to continue following the show while people talk over it without losing vital info. Either way, shows should be watched in their original language. Watching in dub takes away from the experience. Its not about "sub better" its about the original language and vision for the show is undeniably, OBJECTIVELY better.

When the dub is comparable or better as in this case, it's better to watch in dub. You'll also be able to follow the show much easier. It's all just getting used to. I used to watch Naruto and DBZ dubbed because that's how it was on tv. When I first started watching sub it felt weird but I quickly realized sub is just better, japanese is a very different language and they make the anime to fit the language, it just works, a lot of stuff sound cringy and corny in english but doesn't in japanese. Like, to this day Goku's japanese voice is still pretty weird to me cause on my native language his dub is goated but apart from that it just makes sense to consume art in the way it was meant to be consumed

Started watching this show after it won the poll and I'm currently around ep 20. I can confirm that it's a certified banger. The world building is top tier and the plot and action are crazy. It can get confusing at times ngl (I think I've had to rewind to re-read subtitles more than any other anime I've watched) but it's not a big deal. The fan service stuff is insane tho. I heard there was fan service before I watched it but I didn't expect straight up nudity on multiple occasions and I don't even want to know what's going on with that one girl and the table (seriously why tf did that need to happen 😭) (also no spoilers plz)

Yes they are indeed brothers, half brothers to be precise. Lelouch straight up says that he is the Eldest son of the late Empress. The Emperor has a lot of wives and a lot of children. This means despite being close in age Clovis is 3rd in line for the throne and Lelouch is 17th in line. If they have a different middle name they have a different mother. Clovis full name is Clovis la Britannia and Lelouch's full name is Lelouch vi Britannia. Which brings to my next point... This anime can get very "Game of Thrones" for lack of a better term. It has a lot of talk of global politics and a lot of characters. I advise you watch the dub for this reason. If you where watching it solo on your own time go with the sub it is better in most of the characters. However for the purposes of filming a reaction, I strongly recommend dub. I can be very difficult to read the subtitles, interact with one another, interact with your audience all while trying to watch the show. I've seen a number of people react to this show and all of them always miss very key plot points. In this show as demonstrated in the first episode something as small as Lalouchs real last name is a pretty big plot point.

I've rewatched a lot of it in dub because I heard a lot of good things about it, and I really wanted to like the dub, but in my opinion it just doesn't hold up when you've seen the original voice acting first. The difference in emotional depth in big moments and even just the little conversations is pretty big. Lelouch has an amazing dub, but to me characters like Nunally and CC are just so much better subbed and bring the show to another level. (This is coming from someone who loves FMAB dubbed, so I'm not a snob I swear haha)

Y'all don't have to watch this show in Dub, you get used to how fast they talk. But, since you're kind of a react channel, it does make it easier to intake information and react to it with the Dub. That being said, this show doesn't specialize in amazing visuals to react to, it's more about the characters and their thoughts/reactions. Your choice, I personally prefer the sub but I think I'm in the minority here

Lelouch is what Light wishes he was like and what everyone thought Light was from the outside perspective, I think this anime is better than Death Note on many levels, so you're in for a ride. Honestly, I feel so excited for you. Such an ICONIC show in the anime community, back in 2013-2018 it was in number one spot for many people and in various tops. I personally found it through a Russian video called 'top 10 anime of all time' with Code Geass as the number one. Hearing the saxophone or whatever that instrument soundtrack made me feel goosebumps... It's been 8 years since I've watched this show and to this day it's in my top 5, and I guarantee it will be in one of your top 3 by the end. However, I feel like 2 episodes a week is too little considering how the plot thickens. I don't really care how the episodes are posted, but watching it in one go (with at least 3-4 episodes a week) is the best course action. Despite being a Haikyuu fan I am even more glad that you started this show instead of Haikyuu (though I will still be dying to see your reactions to it), P.S. sorry for rumbling, as you can see it left a huge impact on me. It was sort of like what AOT was for you, in my childhood years.

I feel like in a country where voice acting is a major part of their entertainment industry, you're going to have incredible voice acting. It's just not the same in the US. I feel like our voice acting is good if the VAs are actual actors/actresses in their own right. If not, I find that the voice acting is pretty stale, and if it's a dub of a Japanese anime, then the English VAs usually try to imitate the tone/delivery of the Japanese VAs, and it just sounds bad.

Canon the thing is Code Geass is an anime original product whereas Naruto is based on a manga. As such, the anime needs to pace itself in order to not catch to the manga because back in the day there was no breaks and the anime just aired weekly. When they caught to the manga they did filler. Back then only anime based on finished manga or anime original series had good pacing like this

I'm glad you guys are enjoying it. It's one of my favorite animes. I don't usually leave comments but I figured that id point it out in case no one else has mentioned it. Just to preference this I don't have a dog in the English dub or jap dub fight but I figured that id give you a fair warning, this anime is not MADE to be read. It's really fast paced and it will only get faster and the characters will talk over each other but only one will be subbed. It just wasn't made for subtitles in mind in terms of pacing. You'd see what I mean by watching both versions. VAs are great for both. I just thought Id mention it since some of you were like it's fast. Well it gets a lot faster and you will definitely miss stuff on your first watch though. Ether way I love the content and can not wait for more Code and GoT.

Glad you guys chose sub, a top-tier dub in anime is still a mid-tier sub comparatively, the FMA experience was definitely watered down a bit because of the sub (despite it being a great dub). Generally, I find that Japanese VAs put their heart and soul into their roles, and English VAs are typically pretty cringey, they just sound like that drama class nerd that grew up and started reading roles. A good dub will only have maximum half of the VAs at above-average level, but Japanese VAs are almost always across the board above average to native English speakers, maybe because it's so different to us, either way it's the best choice for sure

Code Geass is one of the goatest shows of all time, but be prepared it has lots of Nudity and some of the most unnecessary fanservice for such a plot heavy show. Other than that enjoy the show its great and the english dub is outstanding. Also the show slows down, but remains fast faced, but its not as fast as the first 2 episodes.

There is a lot of dialogue in this show, it's pretty much like these 2 episodes throughout. So it doesn't matter how good the sub is if you're reading a novel and can't even look athe screen, animations, expressions etc

Well the threads you quoted are pretty mixed in terms of suggesting sub or dub. But people who recommend dub do so for the sole reason that Lelouche does have a great dub. The problem is that the rest of the cast dubbed, and the way the dialogue flows in the dub, is pretty cringey and didn't age well imo. Whereas the Japanese voice actors are top tier for every single character. Just compare Nunally scenes in Japanese to the English... sub is lightyears better for her and pretty much every other character than Lelouch. I can't even take her scenes seriously in dub haha.

this show literally goes hand and hand with AOT. i dont really see any similarities with 86 besides the mech aspect. think of it this way. Also, there definitely is alot to this show lol but on the rewatch (This is like my 4th time watching this) it definitely isnt as hard to keep up with the dialogue Eleven/Japan = Paradise, Brittania = Marley and Honorary-Britannian = Honorary-Marleyan Lelouch is actually one of my favorite MC's like top 5 and you will see that as you guys get further in the show.

1. Lelouch is a Britannian Student, making him Britannian. This will be explored more soon. 2. The prince’s name is Clovis. Todoh is someone else. 3. The surname of Britannia means you are royalty of the Britannian empire. Names can get crazy in this show because of how many characters there are so pay attention the best you can and try to keep tabs. 4. Japanese people are now named Elevens because Japan was renamed to Area 11. They’re basically viewed as subhuman now and the only way they can live a decent life is to devote themselves to Britannia and become an Honorary-Britannian. This is a really complex anime so it requires good attention. I recommend rewatching episodes by yourself and/or taking notes.

I think the boys will appreciate Code Geass even more after 70+ episodes of snail's pace Naruto with its endlessly long, cicada-laden staredown/buildup scenes... even for a standard length series Code Geass moves incredibly fast. Keeps you thinking and keeps you engaged. Good shit.

Glad you guys went with the sub. Once you get familiar with the characters and the setting it's a lot easier to keep up with. And despite what a vocal minority might say, the english dub has some really bad key performances from important supporting cast members. The sub the way to go here.

I would recommend watching one episode in dub to see if you will like it or not. I do think the dub is amazing and I would say better then the sub but the sub is also good but its hard to keep up because the show moves so fast.

Lelouch in dub is fantastic, his VA is actually a big fan of the series and treated it like a genuine passion project. The problem is the rest of the cast are very much your average run of the mill nobodies save for maybe 1 or 2 others. Meanwhile Japanese cast is filled with all stars.
