Fringe S3E12

3.12 CONCENTRATE AND ASK AGAIN

Comments

By the way, I keep writing "this side" and "that side" but is that accurate? Obviously, all fiction is an alternate reality but I think in most of it you're supposed to think of it as "our world" even if there are men and women flying around the place in capes and spandex. I wonder with Fringe which world is really meant to be ours, if any, and if they put any thought into that.

It makes perfect sense that he has feelings for Fauxlivia. His entire romantic relationship was withe her. He fell for Olivia but they kissed only once, I think, then they had to run off and save the world or whatever they do. The next time they had any romantic connection it was actually Fauxlivia. It's horrible for all three of them really. Both 'livias have feelings for Peter and he has feelings for both of them. He also has a lot of guilt and so must Fauxlivia if she really did care for him but also had to lie to and manipulate him. Fauxlivia probably feels Peter can't love her after what she did, especially given the way Peter shot her "hostage" in the head to ensure her capture, and yet Sam seems to think their getting together is still a possibilty. Olivia has so many problems surrounding the whole situation that she's unpredictable. I can see her remaining friends with Peter without romance, and I can also see her coming to terms with everything and getting together with Peter. The writers are so good for this show that they could go in any direction with it. In this situation I feel most sorry for Olivia, though I've actually been closest to Peter's position and I understand a measure of his guilt. Fauxlivia also has my sympathy though. She was sent on a mission to fight for her side in a war this side doesn't even know is happening, beyond the few connected to the Fringe team. She's seen all the disasters on her side and the thousands? tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands? of dead innocents and she's been told "our side" has caused it. She expects to find monsters and instead finds Walter to be a seemingly harmless, kind and caring man whom she comes to like; Peter's completely different from what she would have expected; And how could anyone find a bad word to say about sweet, adorable Astrid? Her entire view of two whole realities has been destroyed. Everything she thought was true needs to be re-examined. She can't trust anything she thought she knew. She was basically a spy behind enemy lines and sleeping with a person to maintain a cover or to prey information from or to blackmail them with sex tapes, well that's pretty much expected in almost any tale of spies keeping undercover. So she should have had no qualms about sleeping with Peter the way she did at first. She probably thought of it as a sacrifice *she* was making to save her entire world from monsters who reached out across Universes to destroy everything she'd ever known. Then she realises they aren't so bad, they're not trying to hurt anyone, she's been manipulating Peter in a way he would probably never forgive and suddenly his forgiveness actually matters to her because she cares. She suddenly sees everything in a different light and realises that in this whole scenario... she's the monster. Her actions were justifiable with the information she had access to when she arrived in this side. Now she knows better. I like it when I can feel sorry for "the bad guys" without them pulling some cliched thing about how their behaviour can be explained by an abusive childhood. I hate Fauxlivia, but I also feel real sympathy for her at this point. It's good writing.

It seems to me that Walter could come up with some kind of headgear that could shield thoughts from entering Simon's mind. Something stylish, like Magneto's helmet.
