I really think it would have been better to tell Peter the whole truth. I feel like if they told him that he was right about the other world, that Walter took him to save his life and that he was trying to find a way to return him and not to tell anybody because people might think he was crazy, he could have handled that, it might have given him hope and even a reason to trust them even if they're not his real parents. In the long run it would have been better.
