Weekly update - July 25th

Hi Everyone,

I've been firmly back in the swing of things this week with my render rig working overtime :) I've fully rendered out 6 scenes since we left our pair at the end of the teaser. I've been catching up too on the scripting side of things.

I'm deep in the thought process of changing how I want to deliver the final stages of the story right now. My original plan was to drop Chap 9 as the last big chapter with 10 and 11 smaller instalments. Chap 9 was to cover year 2, chap 10 year 3 and chap 11 post Uni. However if I do that, it could be quite some time before I deliver chap 9 as there is a lot of year 2 still to go. There is also a natural break in the storyline I'm coming up to as I develop. The danger too if I stuck to my original plan is that Chapter 9 would just get too big, which would be more difficult to consume.

As you can probably tell I'm leaning right now towards changing things up a little. The new plan would be first to change the title of Chapter 9 to "Back to Uni" and have it run through the early weeks of year 2. Chapter 10 would then see out the rest year 2 and encompass the summer break. Chapter 11 (which I may split into 2, purely for flow reasons, as the final chapter of the story I want to be kind of the epilogue) would be year 3 and post Uni.

This new plan would mean I can deliver something a lot faster, I can also keep the chapters more in line with what has been delivered before. There are a lot of advantages I'm seeing right now and not too many disadvantages. I'm going to mull over it for the next few days and I will let you know in next week's update the route I'm going to take. I should be able to estimate a delivery date too then, if my thought process remains the same.

OK, I think that's enough rambling on my part this week. As always thank you so much for all your continued support, it is never not appreciated.

Have a great weekend,

Cheers.

Those are great points Linni. I've stayed pretty true to the original story though I had way back when I started this. What I've tended to do a few times is underestimate how much content I need to fit into a chapter. That is certainly the case with 9, so it does make sense splitting up year 2 over a couple of chapters. Here's a little snippet of something I did leave out from those first few drafts. There was going to be an aunt who would have a pretty major role. She lived some place between Newcastle and Finch Green. Not sure why I dropped that, I guess I was able to achieve what I wanted to through other characters.

You know... I'm just spit-ballin' here, but have you heard of the phrase "Mission Creep"? You know, where things keep getting added to a project until it no longer looks like the original project? Try to avoid that. Stick to the story. :) Now... streamlining and making it work smoother or more logically... that's worth doing. Storytelling is an art, and I think you are doing a great job of it. Don't get lost in the forest. Otherwise, I might just have to come find you. ;) ~Linni
