Prompt: A Quivering Heart

Summary: A shy slime girl named Hannah meets with her crush, a cool and standoffish psychic girl named Rebecca, on the rooftop after school. Hannah is nervous, but eventually works up the courage to tell Rebecca that she has a crush on her, yet immediately grows anxious when she realizes Rebecca might find her weird for being gay and having a crush on a girl. Rebecca, meanwhile, reassures Hannah that she has nothing to worry about, and admits that she had slight feelings for her too, but never knew how to approach her. Overjoyed that Rebecca accepted her for who she is, Hannah breaks down in tears and hugs Rebecca, with the two of them agreeing to stick together from now on. Commissioned by AltrixWrites for the month of August 2022.

Okay. Just leave the letter in her locker. That's all you have to do.

It was the middle of the day at Crossroads High, and Hannah had gotten permission to dip out of second period, feigning an excuse about going to the bathroom. It would be a discreet time to leave an envelope in Rebecca's locker without her being any the wiser. It was the best way for Hannah to organize her thoughts—Rebecca was a literal mind-reader, a girl with potent psychic abilities that seemed to have a knack for probing at people's thoughts. But as long as Hannah could get her thoughts all on the page, she could say as much or as little as she wanted.

It took a couple tries to get the wording right. It didn't help that Hannah was an anxious mess most of the time. A diminutive slime girl, she had a tendency of getting pink goop splattering all over the page, so she had to toss out a couple of the drafts. But she got it right this time. It was ready. She could slip it into one of the little slots.

...She had been standing there, trying to build up the courage to actually follow through. Once she slipped it in, there would be no going back. Her translucent hand hovered over her knapsack, her finger tracing the outline of a pink-heart-envelope. She swallowed a lump in her throat, wincing as she willed herself to just do it.

"Okay!" Hannah drew the envelope. "Let's go!"

With a quick motion, and without giving herself a chance to reconsider,  she jammed it through the narrow slot! She backed away, blinked as she ran a hand through short, gummy strands of her hair.

"Hah... it's done." Hannah nodded. "Okay... back to class... I did everything right this time."

Her legs quivered like jelly as she forced one foot in front of the other. It was time to get back to class... she knew she had done everything right.

...

... ...

... ... ...

Except... as morning turned to noon, and then the afternoon, Hannah was having second thoughts. She was fidgeting at her desk nonstop, her pink eyes scanning the wall clock as well as the door. Every second that passed was another step closer to... well, she wasn't sure, but the formless sense of anxiety weighed in her gut like a stone.

RIIIIIIING!!

Final bell! If Hannah was quick, she could make it back to the locker! Maybe she could bail out before it was too late. She leapt from out from her desk, her legs coiled into a spring, as she launched towards the doorframe.

Splurt. She splattered slightly on impact, but she pulled herself together, pulling up the sleeves of her white school uniform as she hurried along, just shy of a headlong spring! She knew the location of Rebecca's locker by heart at this point, she had rehearsed this plan so much...

"482... 482... here!" Hannah halted, getting up on her tippy toes as she pressed against the locker. She reached for the gap through which she entered the envelope previously, her fingers flattening to slip inside, her arm stretching to close the gap. The locker rumbled as her arm, stretched to about twice its length, fumbled and rattled inside, trying to find it.

"I-it was right here... where is it...?" Hannah grunted, fumbling to grab at something or other. Why did the locker have so much paper in it!?

"Uh, Hannah?"

A familiar voice called out from behind her. Hannah froze up, tensing as she turned her head to the side. There was Rebecca, a sophomore, her senior by one year. She had her hair tied back in a long black ponytail,  and her expression, always so serious, remained fixed on Hannah.

"O-oh! U-um, hi!" Hannah tried to play it cool, though the streaks of pink ooze streaking down her face in a panic betrayed her. Rebecca cocked her head to the side, her eyes staring at the way Hannah's arm cartoonishly slipped into the locker.

"This is, uh... my locker." Rebecca muttered.

"...OH! Right." Hannah jerked her arm back, clasping it behind her as she massaged it back into shape. She forced a smile, rocking back and forth. "Don't mind me, it was just a-"

"There's something in here you didn't want me to see?" Rebecca tapped her head, and the forced smile from Hannah dissipated. Dang it, again!? She thought to herself as Rebecca turned to the lock. With a little mental nudging, the lock undid itself.

There was no hiding it now—the pink envelope swayed out, and nearly hit the ground... until Rebecca stopped its fall with a minor display of telekinetic ability. The envelope floated back up as her eyes widened.

"A love letter... for me?" Rebecca looked it over, and then back to Hannah. The slime girl dared not make a move, but the way her cheeks flared up with a darker pigment said everything.

Rebecca stared, creasing the envelope in her fingers. She opened it, and began to read. Hannah could only watch, waiting in dreadful silence as Rebecca read it from beginning to end. Even with the hustle of the end of the schoolday going on all around them, it felt like they were in a bubble all their own, as if time slowed to a crawl.

Rebecca's eyes widened. She lowered the paper as she looked at Hannah. "Hannah...? This isn't signed, did you..."

"Y-yes." Hannah prodded her fingers together. "I-I wanted to meet, somewhere romantic, not... right here. I didn't know if you would like me back, or if you were even into girls, and you're really important to me and I don't wanna make it weird or lose you as a friend but when I look at you I get all warm and fuzzy and I can't stop-"

"Hannah, Hannah, please!" Rebecca chuckled, gesturing her hands in a disarming manner. "I... I had a hunch, you had feelings for me..."

"...Because of the mind-reading stuff...?" Hannah stirred anxiously.

"Well, a bit, but also... you're not very subtle either." Rebecca shrugged. "You get so hot and fluster, it's like watching molten lava. You're bubbling right now, see?"

"R-Rebecca, I..." Hannah wanted to object, but she felt it too. She pouted. "C'mon... you keep teasing me after I spill my guts and-"

"Sorry, I'm sorry!" Rebecca laughed. "Here, maybe this will help. Close your eyes."

"Eh? I-"

Hannah could barely react before Rebecca kneeled down, her eyes closing in turn as she pursed her lips, kissing Hannah quickly and tenderly right on the lips. Hannah's breath went wispy, her eyes widening as she stared right back into Rebecca's pretty, chestnut eyes.

"I like you too." Rebecca whispered. "And I don't think I could've pulled off a big love letter reveal like that. It was really brave..." Rebecca blushed as she spoke intimately, yet her voice rippled with passion.

"...Haaah...??" Hannah could scarcely believe it. Her entire gelatinous body quivered at Rebecca's touch. Her breath was so sensuous and warm...

She had... kissed her.

"Haaaah...~" Hannah swooned, rubbing her cheeks as a warm feeling penetrated her soft body, overwhelming it. She was in such a state of bliss, she felt like she would melt away...

...Actually, the cool feeling of the linoleum tiles against her soft, pink biomass indicated she was melting. Rebecca, noticing Hannah's lower body getting increasingly amorphous, hurried forward to catch her.

"O-oh no, are you fainting??" Rebecca blinked. "Do we need to go to the infirmary?"

"N-no... I'm fine... never been better..." Hannah's lips trembled, allowing herself to be held in Rebecca's arms. Her arms stretched, wrapping around Rebecca's shoulders as she pulled herself upwards into a hug.

"I'm so happy...!" Hannah laughed, exclaiming aloud. She had been bracing herself to be heartbroken, so anxious... she had been yearning for this moment for so long.

And it was finally here. And it was everything she dreamed of, and more.
