[Weekly Updates] June 22nd, 2020

How was everyone's week? My insomnia kicks back into gear again, unfortunately. Hope you all stays healthy and active!

Anyway, Happy Father's Day!

ABOUT THE CHANNEL

ABOUT MEDIA

So that's the update this week. I really should go back to watching more movies, but there isn't a lot that catches my interests lately. Especially with the current climate, It's hard to find myself watching films with heavy and serious subject matters.

I guess in the meantime, I'll continue to find myself sandwiched between Animal Crossing and Xenoblade.

Comments

I watched Birds of Prey in the theatre and was pretty torn about how I feel about it. The first half is kinda slow and dull, and then it becomes a decent action thriller, but still doesn't hold my attention much. The charm of the actresses are the only thing that undeniably make the film watchable.

I tried to watch Birds of Prey and just couldn't finish it. It's really hard to ignore the 'get woke, go broke' rally cries with a movie like this, especially when the 'strongest' character is the serial killer Victor Zzasz because we can at least understand his motivations (everything he does is out of love for Black Mask or to keep himself safe). And I don't mean 'strongest' as in 'best at fighting' or ' most capable' or even 'highest physical strength by numerical values'. I mean 'most developed character within this film's context.' And when viewing this film it's almost essential to view it both as a part of a universe because of how little we're given, but also very damaging to do so. Are we supposed to believe that the police know about the Canary Cry but Black Mask does not? Are we supposed to accept that the police know where Harley lives and never arrested her despite her being an escaped convict and a murderer? I get that this is the 'shut your brain off' mentality people talk about, but this isn't nitpicking. This is an audience member being pulled from the film over and over and over because the people who made it didn't care about logical or narrative consistency. As for the subtitles comment: there is so much more you get out of films when watching them with subtitles. People say things that there isn't any way you could have heard because of music drowning it out, or because of recording device placement, or what have you. It's almost essential for a good deal of films. Like Nightcrawler from a few years ago - wonderful script, spoken sometimes way, way too quickly or by people off camera. Seeing everything that every character says adds so much to it. That said I feel you can probably skip that rewatch of Death Proof. To me that's a movie that's exactly what the trailer sold, and if you've seen any 'confrontation' chunk out of it you've seen all of it.
