[Episode] Why I Don't Like Shin Godzilla | Video Essay

Yep. People are going to crucify me.

I watched this movie a few times, and every time, I came to the same conclusion: I don't like it. I just can't bring myself to like it. I find this movie impressively made, and decently paced. I can only imagine how powerful the visual is to Japanese people. Its effects is unlike any Godzilla film that came before. For the first time, landscapes are truly realistic and recognizable. It must have been incredibly visceral.

Yet... If I'm Japanese, I would be rather uncomfortable, knowing my side of the story is completely ignored, in favour of a story purely about politicians.

That said, my opinion here does not mean the film is bad, or that you should feel bad for liking this film. There is no doubt this film is great, and has great intentions.

But hey, now that you know my opinions on this, what is your thought?

Actually, I wrote off Godzilla and all the other monster-world movies because I don't quite like end-of-the-world type shows, but after your video I now realise that there was a lot more to the story than just rawr-rawr-fire-beam-everyone-dies, so I'm totally considering actually sitting down and watching it through. A very very interesting take and analysis!

Oh man. I really like Shin Godzilla, even though I noticed it seeming a bit right wing (as a fan of American action movies, I've learned to live with movies that I think have ugly politics). That said, this video has absolutely made me rethink how well the movie manages the metaphor, and I definitely don't think I'll be able to watch it in quite the same way next time. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis.
