[Episode] Mothra Trilogy: Making a Children's Film | Video Essay

Here it is, the video voted by you! Sorry for taking so long to get around to this.

I don't think it's too controversial to say that the Mothra Heisei trilogy just isn't very good. Most reviews either point to its simplistic plots as the main flaw, or blame it on the fact that the series are aimed at kids.

But there are plenty of classic films there are aimed at kids and loved by everyone. So what's up with that?

"Anyone who has watched a Miyazaki or Pixar film knows that is.... not true." My mind filled in a much stronger word there... ;) Seriously, thank you for this video and especially its conclusion. One of the phrases I really despise is "It's just a kid's movie," as a way of justifying poor storytelling or, worse, a poor story. That's just baffling to me. Firstly, wow do you have a really lousy view about children. They are astute and capable and they can and indeed both do and need to deal with quite big things. Secondly, they're our children. We should _want_ to provide them with the best so they can forever develop and grow towards their best. We can create these amazing, rich, and multi-layered stories, and kids deserve them. :)
