Ben is a lost boy, the original one. He wants to hide from resposability and denies his parents, so he's created his own persona to fulfill his dreams... Angry at whoever tries to question it.
I would tweak it a little so the image matchets Rey's narrative, she would be a foster kid, so when Ben came for her, inviting her to a world of wonder she'd be more than willing to go but she still wants a family... She will later realize that it's not possible to have both and thus she's face with a hard decision.
What do you think? Is my reasoning on cue? Or am I faar from home?
