At what age were children put into an apprenticeship. Did their families decide what they would learn or was it a decisions for the community. Was an apprenticeship available to all children or just a certain group (class) of people

The British suffered terribly during Washington's seige of Boston. American privateers raided supply ships, they were starving and there was a smallpox epidemic that eventually spread to the community. In most wars up until Vietnam, more soldiers died of disease and exposure than direct war wounds. In the colonies, smallpox and yellow fever were the two major mass killers. Yellow fever is one reason why the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia every summer. They didn't know it spread through mosquitos rather, they blamed the "vapours" from the swampy areas. Congress established the Medical Service of the Continental Army on July 27, 1775, and placed a "Chief physician & director general" of the Continental Army as its head. John Adams had a lot to do with that. His [surgeon general's] compiled records are probably available in the National Archives and may be accessable on-line.

Great topic, but I will have to think about where I would find the answer???

Hope you have a glance at this again, I thought of a question. 😁 Is there anyway to compare on a documented level, Deaths due to disease instead of combat, in the revolutionary war vs. the civil war? We don't hear a lot about the British being decimated by sickness; Is that because they were better supplied, or better propagandized?

Thanks! Post Mortem: We went to the Chadd's Ford Days Colonial Festival. It was more of a crafts fair and not strictly colonial. There were some colonial vendors, a small part of a colonial regiment and a field piece. There were a few demonstrations but it wasn't anything close to Ft. Frederick or Martin's Station. A reenactor soldier said next week is the Battle for Brandywine Station and it is supposed to be big. Last year, he said there were over a 1,000 reenactors on the field. Unfortunately we won't make that one.

Thanks for addressing the questions and sharing all the knowledge! That was very cool! Notching sounds difficult!! Best of luck to all of you with the project. We are looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Roselyn

Did you harvest the logs from your property and what tools do plan to use? Strictly axes or saws, chisels etc.

Jason Jablonski

Thanks, everyone for chiming in!!!

Jon Townsend

Can you link me to a picture?

Jon Townsend

I'll do some digging and try to mention the reference.

Jon Townsend

Great question.

Jon Townsend

I'll cover this.

Jon Townsend

I'll hopefully have an answer for this one.

Jon Townsend

Hmmmm, I'll try to cover this.

Jon Townsend

Thanks for the suggestion!

Jon Townsend

I think I have an quick answer for this one.

Jon Townsend

I'll try to cover this one in the livestream today.

Jon Townsend

Have fun at the event!

I have noticed little foot stools in some of the paintings. I suspect this was to make the legs level so that the lap could be used as a level work space. Why was this custom lost?

Joyce Johnson

Also what 1790 book were you reading from in the van? I try and seek out the books you reference. We really enjoyed the ride along format of the cabin video, it peaked our curiousity and was educational. Hopefully you can work more of that type in. Thank you to you and your crew for the work and effort that goes into making these.

Jason Jablonski

I second the question over the type of notching you will use and why?

Jason Jablonski

You had mentioned in various past videos that not all of the colonists were "on board" with the fight for independence from England. What were some of the reasons, or justifications, as to why some colonists just did not agree with independence? (Besides the obvious fear of punishment.) Thank you! I have had a much greater appreciation of recent centuries because I am better understanding the 1700s!

RG de Stolfe

When you all are going to living history events, do you take on the impression of another person from the past, like Carol does with Maggie? If yes, of whom?

Roselyn

When you were looking for the perfect cabin, the cabins seemed to have different types of notching. V shaped, round... would one method be preferable over the other?

Roselyn

Are you referencing any particular journal or book in planning the new Log Cabin Build? Will this structure be at a location that the Nutmeg Tavern Community can visit once complete?

Julie Esper

I miss the old "questions and answers" format videos you used to do to cover questions and comments asked on videos. I don't have a particular question for tomorrow, but it would be nice to see this pop up as a segment on the livestream every so often.

Emjayhawk

What kind of emergency services did they have, like fire departments, hospitals, and police forces?

Kristin Ford

Can you discuss coin silver and it’s use instead of sterling silver in 18th century? As I understand it, it’s because colonials didn’t want to pay taxes on importing sterling silver bars, so they just melted down coins to make things like silverware because 90% silver is β€œgood enough” compared to 92.5% in sterling. Is this really true?

Mike Kruk

We might have to catch the upload, we're going to Chadd's Ford Days Colonial Festival this weekend. We will probably be on the road.

Philip Esteban

Now that you some real Youtube clout, can you ask them why they cut off the ends of some (not all) of your videos. And, 18th century hot air ballooning! Was just a gimmick or did anyone in the U.S. take it seriously?
