Director Nasty kinda had it. Rocklee is right that Shinn has felt like he was dead since his brother choked him, but the purpose kept him going. He was a ghost, a dead man with unfinished business. Then he killed his brother. And no his business is finished. End of season 1 WAS him moving on but then he didn't fucking die. That's why he has a deathwish now. He doesn't know how to handle this new situation. And Lena dying made it worse. She was the one that was supposed to be HIS Reaper, to carry him on after he passed. But now he outlived her and he has no one. He's gonna be the last, everyone will leave and he will carry them forever. Fuck that's depressing.

Spider Lillies (the red flower shown all the time) is most commonly found in cemeteries and old battlefields (specifically those where soldiers were buried, burned en masse, or just left to rot) and is a common symbolism for death, battlefields, soldiers, and the undead worldwide but particularly Japan where flower meanings are particularly significant culturally. Meanwhile the ants are black soldier ants (with obvious symbolism, lol), and fun fact the BSA has the most potent venom of any insect making them the best species to symbolize the 86 IMO. I wanted to put this here since I thought about this series and episode specifically the second I heard about the butterfly symbolism. They're common symbols in other dark anime so I hope this helps somebody though its a little late for this series. lol
