Chapter 105 – Escape

‘She’s taking forever…’ Percy tapped his foot.

Standing at the base of the Fungal Spire, he was waiting for Nesha to arrive. The two hours she’d mentioned were nothing more than the time until she closed the gambling den for the night. Despite the urgency of the situation, she couldn’t just drop everything and run away abruptly, as that would raise more than a couple eyebrows.

‘At least the guards didn’t search me on the way here.’

Evidently, the Divine Root had only bothered to increase the security at the gate leading outside the Guild, and presumably the Spire’s perimeter. Even in normal times, they mostly cared about people leaving the settlement, to ensure they weren’t carrying any nectar with them, breaking the Guild’s monopoly on the substance.

It was why Percy hadn’t been checked thoroughly upon first arriving. Also, why the Agent hadn’t encountered too much trouble smuggling the Aurora Dew or the enlightenment potions over the past few months. As for the people hunting on the mushrooms, nobody ever bothered to track their movements.

Noticing something by the corner of his eye, Percy turned to see his familiar swiftly approaching.

“CAW!” the bird greeted upon landing.

‘Caw indeed.’ Percy replied, before sifting through the bandage wrapped around Micky’s abdomen.

It was the same one he’d used back when he still met the Agent regularly. Since he no longer had to do that, he’d long passed it to the crow to conceal its new core. Not that a beast adorned with an accessory wasn’t conspicuous, but it was certainly better than the alternative. Especially since Percy had purposely commissioned for the bandage to be crafted out of a dark fabric, to more easily blend in with the bird’s plumage.

‘Where is it?!’ Percy’s heart skipped a beat after failing to find what he was looking for. ‘Don’t tell me you dropped it?!’

“KRAA! KRAA!!” the bird protested in indignation before pecking his shoulder.

It was only a few seconds later that he finally located a small object somewhere between the cloth and the feathers, dousing his rising panic. Next, Percy wore it around his neck. It was a pendant, with a weirdly shaped gem as its focus. Cut into a perfect cube, the lustrous stone somewhat resembled onyx, though that wasn’t quite what it was. Countless tiny lights glittered like stars across its faces, contrasting against the ebony backdrop they dotted. Looking closer, the particles weren’t splayed randomly, instead forming orderly constellations. Percy knew those were the runes responsible for the enchantment.

‘It’s pretty AND useful. But still lacklustre compared to what they have in the Vault.’

“I admit rushing to buy the spatial amulet was the right move.” Nesha said, having arrived at some point.

He shrugged.

“Well, we couldn’t exactly carry everything around without it.”

After awakening the familiar’s second core, Percy hadn’t really had much else he’d wanted to spend his money on. His only goal at that point had been to amass enough brewing materials to last him for some time. Of course, considering his and Micky’s rate of consumption, and his less-than-stellar-yield, Percy currently needed around twenty doses of the regular elixirs per day, which translated to thousands over the course of a single year.

Luckily, he’d made plenty of contribution points during the past nine months. Over eight million in total!

Of those earnings, he’d spent more than a million on the enlightenment potions and another million on the amulet. As for the other tools and secondary materials he needed to brew on the run… Well, those cost peanuts comparatively speaking. In any case, that had still left him over six million to buy the primary ingredients of the Aurora Dew – the regular elixirs.

“I can’t believe there are nearly twenty thousand doses in this tiny necklace.” he mused.

Though one cubic metre of space wasn’t that much, it could easily fit enough of the pinkie-sized vials to last him for years. Nesha had also pitched in, converting her own share into materials, storing them in Percy’s amulet. With these, they could both keep drinking Aurora Dew for the next two years.

Of course, he’d originally planned to remain here longer. Sadly, that wasn’t possible now. As things stood, they’d run out of elixirs right after the lotus bloomed. And depending on how their escape went, they might not be able to return to the Guild for more.

‘Oh well. That’s a problem for future Percy…’

“Are you sure this is the best move?” Nesha suddenly asked, fidgeting.

“For me, yes.” Percy replied, before elaborating. “Coming clean to the Divine Root is admittedly tempting, but I have other secrets besides the elixirs that I don’t want them to learn.”

Nesha gave Micky a cursory glance.

“You mean this Orange cored beast you’ve somehow tamed?”

“Among other things…” he replied vaguely.

Even if he could somehow guard all his secrets from them, he wasn’t entirely convinced they’d treat him as fairly as they claimed. After all, he’d seen the disdainful looks the people of the Divine Root had given him, and he’d heard the sheer contempt with which Hermes talked about Red-borns. The moment they realized how easily the pure mana could be crystallized, he’d lose all worth in their eyes.

‘No, escaping is my only option…’

Not Nesha’s though. Glancing at her, he pondered the implications of what he was asking her to do. Depending on how everything went, they might end up as fugitives on the run from actual gods.

“You don’t have to come with me.”

Nesha raised an eyebrow.

“They’re more likely to notice my involvement. I was the one in charge of everything. And unlike you, I won’t be able to give them what they want. They’ll skin me alive…” she said, biting her lip.

But Percy shook his head.

“My mentor knows the recipe. Find him and work together to make a deal with them. They only want the elixirs. They don’t really care what happens to you.”

What Percy had left unsaid was that this way, he’d lose both his advantage and his means of making money. In a few years, he might be the only one on Remior who couldn’t afford the Aurora Dew.

‘Well, me and all the other Red-borns.’

Still, it wouldn’t be fair to force his problems on Nesha. The girl nervously crossed her arms, apparently considering it. At first, he gave her a couple of minutes to think. It was a huge decision, and he didn’t want to rush her. However, as she continued to remain silent, he was about to urge her, when she suddenly spoke.

“I’ll come with you.”

Percy carefully scanned her. Nesha had stopped shaking, her eyes now burning with determination. He didn’t mind her tagging along – he trusted her after working together for so long. Plus, she was useful, not only because of her bloodline and commercial skills, but also due to her affinity.

Though there was one thing he needed to know first.

“Why?”

Nesha furrowed her brow, apparently contemplating the question.

“Before we started collaborating, I was working towards a certain goal… Though I suppose I always knew deep down that it wasn’t a very realistic one.” she ultimately said.

“What changed?” Percy asked.

She shrugged.

“Well, I’ve made more money in the past year than I would’ve made in a decade. Not to mention, the elixirs gave me hope of catching up to my enemies in this lifetime.”

“Lifetime?” Percy failed to suppress a chuckle. “If you come with me, I can’t even promise we’ll be alive tomorrow. Plus, the recipe is going public in nineteen years regardless of what we do.”

She certainly knew he was telling the truth, though she didn’t seem deterred.

“I have a hunch that sticking with you will give me a chance to get my revenge. That’s enough.”

Percy grinned.

“Welcome to the team then. By the way, the bird is Micky.”

She nodded.

“So, what’s the plan? Are we going to look for a weak point in the perimeter?” she asked.

But Percy shook his head.

“Even on the off chance we get out, they’ll spot us. It’ll only be a matter of time before they let the people in charge know. And we can’t outrun a Blue core.”

“What other choice do we have? We can’t leave through the front gate…”

Percy smiled.

“How about below the Guild?”

Nesha tilted her head. She appeared about to voice her confusion when…

CRACK

A loud noise came from a bunch of boulders a few dozen metres away from them. There seemed to be a hole in the rocky formation, though it was only big enough for something the size of an apple to squeeze through. The sounds escalated, as the stones by the tiny entrance began to shake.

A few moments later, a pair of oversized mandibles pierced through, followed by a head, and a torso… Before long, a man-sized wasp emerged, widening the tunnel in its passing. Nesha took a step back, already drawing mana from her core, as a pitch-black bubble manifested in her hand. But she didn’t stop there, gathering more as she stared at the bug.

“How the hell did a Starry Soldier end up on the first level?!” she asked nobody in particular.

Percy placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Stop. The bug is our way out.” he said, eliciting an odd expression from his friend.

Nesha turned towards the wasp again, her features twisting in incredulity upon seeing the creature wave at her with its forelimb.

Hi I like the story so far. Im at chapter 73 and I have 3 questions. 1: If the elixir is that important for the world why is there no local house force at the guild that helps train alchemists for free so they sell elixirs at a discount later or smth ? 2: with the circulation technique he clearly proooved his worth in discovering knowledge why us there no fixed communication with his grandfather alrdy established 3: the existence of his familar is a problem due to how unique it is. But I would imagine other taming techniques would exist. There is magic after all and bloodlines. cheers jake

Lots of reasons. She isn't attacking for one. She's the closest friend he's got for two. The next closest friend is the random cashier who sells him food who has nothing to offer. And the next closest friend is the mentor who railroaded him into the worst deal ever for his discovery (basically, I'm rich and have nothing to lose and powerful enough you can't stop me, you get 20 years and then I'm going to screw you by going public) so he'd obviously would have been better off not trusting that guy and not figuring out the aurora elixir and just using the paste. So if he doesn't trust the girl who has never betrayed him or done anything wrong, who is he going to trust? And kill her? Really? There's no benefit. He can't kill his mentor, so it doesn't even prevent leaks.

What does Percival's situation has ANYTHING to do with Micky's world though? Look if Percy were to tell the divine order about his bloodline they wouldn't for any first secret kill or torture him, they would keep him around as a valued opportunity. You YOURSELF wrote the chapter in which the Titan of the Vault LET HIM GO, by choice! I mean of course he loses "some freedom" the freedom to randomly get himself killed for example but there is no reason why a very rational and intelligent high ranking god in the divine order would not sponsor Percy with secure training and stuff while he floats around and discovers secrets... Also which "rules" has he broken? None we were told so far... he was stupid yes but didn't give support to Remiors enemies or something. Also what kind of shitty logic is "nobody had stumbled on this pretty simple discovery for tens of millenia but became it's not super secret über complicated shit they won't value percy at all?" ? He DID discover it literally both the crystals AND how they help with core cleansing... Do you by chance know how nobel prizes and science in general works? Hundred or thousands of people try all kinds of shit in unknown fields and one stumbles upon something new... Peniciliin for example "you know really anyone could have left a certain mold in a Petri dish so because you discovered something simple we will defound all your research and maybe also imprison you for good measure since you broke safety procedures about mold handling" this is the equivalent of punishing and not rewarding Percy for this discovery and any Moron would see his extremely different perspective due to his soul clones could lead to an almost infinite number of untold useful discoveries! Sorry if this is ranting but the explanation isn't one so far for the rest: he has elixir for 2 years AND??? we already know he needs fucking THOUSANDS OF YEARS to reach any real strength and now literally did everything he could to make himself an enemy of the divine fucking order he could LITERALLY have gotten the potions for Micky if he has just made dew for himself and normal alchemy on the side for a couple of years. Not even mentioning that a whole order of literal gods can't find 2 oranges that's the worst immersion breaking thing for me. It's like at the least they should have some kind of divination god/array and scry for the inventor of the elixir. We're talking about Phoebe who is on the level of "creating new worlds" and gods a step below that... Personally I just feel like hidden identity plot lines don't make sense when it's a random country bum MC hiding from the ruler of the world capable of shattering continents with their power and their legions of subordinate Gods... If you hadn't shown us The Vault a World literally Created by a Titan by himself out of nothing I could see "titans and gods are not so super powerful so it might be possible". But you have... You chose to first show us Percy has zero chance to hide from titans or gods when they're looking for him actively in their domain and now have him do exactly that.

I don't believe it. Red borns treated as shit, why waste precious resources on redborn when you can get it by force of brainwashing or some divine s*t. Then comes curiosity. When one side doesn't hsve any power, there is no stopping. They'll force out as many curious secrets as possible and probably put him as a slsve to spy on other worlds and get info, or make him breeding bull to have more with ssme bloodline snd affinity under their control. Who csn stop them from that? You need at least equal power or at minimum a way for mutual destruction to be treated fairly. He will become their plaything. Expecting divine order to be nice and fair sounds naive to me.

Irakli Jishkariani

F*ck, all this BS was probably just to try and give that female character any relevance and put her in mcs party. Why the hell is he bringing her with him, let alone letting her know more of his secrets?! :/ He decided to kill that other mage to keep Micky a secret, why isn't he just silencing her too? Would make things ALOT easier, there's no reason why she shouldn't be treated the same. I hate when stories bends backwards like this to accommodate female characters that by no means should have prolonged relevance. It's just so disappointing.

Zenty

What rules has he broken exactly? Are all recipes supposed to be public knowledge immediately? I feel like it’d cost a pittance for the divine order to offer him a lifetime supply of the new elixir in exchange for the recipe. He could sell it in exchange for that, and then they could just let him loose to discover new stuff that helps Remior in the future.

Noah

Well, some things to consider. 1) The cyan crystals aren't exactly some groundbreaking discovery. Nobody knew about it because they hadn't stumbled upon it, but once Percy shows them how it's done it's a simple trick to replicate. The Divine Order won't just treat him as some respected genius and forgive all his rule-breaking because he found out how to condense crystals somehow. 2) His plan to profit from the AD has already worked. His primary goal was to get a million points for Micky's second core and to fund his own elixir needs. He's done all that. If he hadn't taken the risks, Micky would still need several more years to get started on the core. Also, Percy already has his needs covered with Aurora Dew for the next 2 years - he just has to find a way forward afterwards. He took a calculated risk, it paid off to an extent, but it wasn't perfect. 3) As for keeping his secrets, again it's out of necessity. You saw what happened to Micky's entire world just for know one technique. Now imagine that + the Moirais Decree + A familiar + powerful bloodline + Aurora Dew, all in the hands of a Red-born kid. Maybe people would treat him nicely, but I think that would be an even bigger gamble than what he's already done. 4) As for how he could escape in this situation or why it would be possible - No spoilers :)

PathOfPen

Well, if he has regular elixirs he can upgrade them, but neither buying them nor selling Aurora Dew is going to be simple when he's on the run. He'll have to find some way to get elixirs - since he can't get nectar outside the Guild. If he had a wasp familiar, he could be much more self-sustainable (the secondary ingredients are cheaper and more abundant)

PathOfPen

Thanks. Also, does he even need a wasp familiar now he can just buy elixirs and upgrade them?

Kbzzy

Thanks for the chapter! As you probably noticed by my comments I really hate this development it just doesn't make sense lore wise really... For the divine order to let 2 dumb kids escape them? For the gods to not say outright since someone was a genius and found something nobody did in the whole universe for millenia we will of course at least Sponsor all their research to see what else is possible... And finally for Percy and his insane behaviour of refusing to let anyone know his secrets. The last one was a bad premise anyhow. He is literally red born he would take thousands of years to reach godhood and was more if he wanted to reach titan. Does he just keep the secret all that time or what? This hard cap on advancement made the "secret identity trope" kind of dumb from the very beginning. Finally how can we still not see that his plan to "profit" from the Dew for 20 years was dumb in the first place? This whole development is riddled with potholes and "Idiot ball behaviour" for almost everyone involved really. Maybe some of those things will get explained a little more rationally later like how they could escape or why the order doesn't do a fill lockdown right away. But the big one "why the fuck does Percy act like the edgy Isekai/spy anime protagonist kid in the first place trying to keep every secret how finds? And how the fuck is he even still alive if he is that foolish..." Will either need to be answered by like "The titan of the vault blessed him with some luck to make sure he would reach the Vault again" or something along those lines or it will remain the point of "Well he is the MC ofc he gets insane luck and plotarmor". Anywas I really hope I will see this differently after a couple more chapters because I love the concept and ideas in this story!

Gopard

No fuck that! He shouldn't even be able to get away here is the problem of this story! A literal god said this is a big deal and they didn't bother to send a violet or white to the guild and properly check ALL the people. Now these 2 idiots will escape a perimeter set up by the by far and away strongest organisation on the planet? He should have come clean to the order ages ago about at least the recipy those are GODS hiding this shit from them would NOT WORK with the reality presented to us! Look I refuse to believe the Order doesn't have a single truth reader this they would have only needed to spend a week or so bringing everyone in a room ask a single quick question and move on to the next one. The way this whole organisation is portrayed it's once again shown that in this world the MC is not "succeeding because he is brilliant and lucky" but because "everyone else seems to be as dumb as bricks"...

Gopard

Yeap, he bought that too. "As for the other tools and secondary materials he needed to brew on the run… Well, those cost peanuts comparatively speaking."

PathOfPen

The whole deal with his mentor and how he just will nilly gave away his secrets is now biting his ass. Good. Deserved. MC is too dumb currently and should be way more strategic and calculating

EsZeus

Doesn’t he need rainbow grass ?

Kbzzy

U r right that would prob be best way. However- he is still a kid and not the brightest. -it also implicates his family putting them at risk. (+a petty reason) - he likely doesn’t like most of the ppl in his family who would get the most out of the elixir(high tier borns) and wouldn’t share out of pettiness

Amazon Shopper

I suspect his mentor will take the blame on himself. That's the only way I can see Percy getting away with this..but damn..this was a terrible outcome. I honestly don't know why he couldn't have just contacted his grandfather and allowed his own family to fund whatever he needed. He could have produced enough Dew for trusted members of the family. Once his Uncle et all knew about the elixir at least, they would have no reason to complain about Baldy spending resources on Percy.

Senoj Ttehr

Haha nice! Happy to see Nesha coming with.

Crapgeezer

Lol at the starry soldier waving at them! 👍😂
