Jack’s mother-in-law was a nightmare.

Kathleen Baker had no reservations about speaking her mind.

Ever since Jack had gotten married to her daughter only six months earlier, Kathleen had been constantly badgering him them to have a baby. And they were only twenty-three. They had plenty of time to have kids in the future, after some fun, travel, and a bit more partying. Jack and Jade were in no rush to start a family, and weren’t necessarily even sure that they wanted kids.

But no, that was not on Kathleen’s agenda.

“This idea is insane,” said Jade as the two sat together at the kitchen table.

The newlyweds were at their wits end, and had come up with a devious plan. It truly was crazy.

As it happened, Jack was a biogeneticist, and a lot of his work involved the genetic engineering of human and animal embryos.

Jade had suggested that they secretly impregnate Kathleen herself. If she desperately wanted a baby to spoil, she might as well carry it on her own!

Kathleen was still young enough. She was in her mid-40s, but people often thought she was younger. She was fit and healthy, and Jack had no doubt that she could carry a baby without issue. Or several babies, for that matter.

“I’m in,” he told Jade decisively. “Let’s do it. When she goes under for her laser eye procedure, I’ll take over, and give her a little something extra. I know her doctor, it won’t be a problem.” Conveniently enough, Jack’s lab was partnered with and adjoined to the same clinician offices where the family benefited from low cost healthcare via his employee benefits package.

Jade grinned back, reaching out to squeeze his hand.

-

It was done.

Kathleen was inseminated with five super-resilient genetically engineered embryos.

Jack still couldn’t believe he had done it.

Two weeks passed, and Jade and Jack weren’t expecting much for a while, but then one day Kathleen showed up at the house in a fitted cardigan, her usually-slim torso bulging visibly.

“I don’t know, I’ve just been so gassy lately,” Kathleen explained of the swell.

Jack and Jade exchanged excited smiles.

“I swear, I’m never eating at that Asian place again. You know, the one on Main?” Kathleen went on, chattering. “By the way, I wanted to have a sit down with you two. We really need to have a serious conversation about your futures. With Jade’s father gone…” (he’d passed away a decade prior) “...we really do need to think about the family line.”

This would be the hundredth of such discussions. Things were getting hostile, and Jade nearly scowled.

But that wasn’t going to dampen Jack’s enthusiasm. His lips twisted into a smirk. “Sure. Great.”

Kathleen was growing rapidly. In another two weeks, she looked as though she was six months pregnant. She was getting so big, so fast, Jack was truly impressed by his handiwork. The embryos were engineered to grow huge and hungry. And as such, Kathleen was constantly eating. During all her intrusive visits to their house, she always had a snack on hand; was always munching away at something. A pastry, a cheese stick, a bag of chips. She seemed a little disgusted with herself, but was also repelled by anything healthy.

-

Soon Jack and Jade decided that it was time to tell Kathleen. She came by their house for one of her frequent visits looking flustered and breathless. She was wearing a blouse she had clearly outgrown by then, the buttons straining against her swollen belly. “I can’t believe how much weight I’m putting on,” she murmured for the umpteenth time as one hand absently cupped her abdomen. She looked eight months pregnant already despite not even being out of the first trimester. Jack was a little stunned to think about how big she was going to get.

Her breasts were gaining as well. Formerly little B-cups, they had surged right to D’s, erect nipples visibly bulging out in her top.

Kathleen was even waddling a little. She made her way over to the table and the mountain of cheese included in the charcuterie board Jade had made just to watch Kathleen gorge it.

“You know cheese is my weakness, hun,” Kathleen complained as she automatically started stuffing cheese cubes into her mouth.

“I thought I’d try something fancy,” Jade responded with a grin.

“And no wine?”

Jade hesitated but did not respond.

“Actually Kathleen,” said Jack. “ I thought the three of us could have a sit down. We need to have a serious talk about…the future. And what not.”

This was just too good.

Kathleen raised her eyebrows as Jack pulled up a chair for her.
