Adan, I feel like you're half-correct with your assertion. Maddox is kinda nuts, but at the same time, he effectively has agency. He goes in and out of a) knowing that his egotistical persona is just a persona, and b) believing his own hype. During his moments of consciousness, he is fully aware of his ability to break this cycle, take a step back, and take accountability for the stupid things he's done and attempt good new habits. But, he doesn't do so because he has a bad attitude and a weak character set that he has no intention of working to strengthen, because in the end his misguided cost-benefit analysis tells him that acknowledging reality will shift the dynamic of what he does drastically enough to affect his bottom line, and in the end his bottom line is primary objective, because he's a douche. And it might seem like Dick's primary objective is his own bottom line, too, but that's the magical thing - Dick always prioritizes being a real dude *just as much* as making money, and maintaining that balance is why Dick is flourishing.

That Maddox story was brutal. There is obviously something really wrong with Maddox. At what point does it seem like Dick really just took advantage of a broken person. Part of what's broken with Maddox is that he's kind of an idealist and not very pragmatic. Prime target for someone like Dick who's a total shark. Damn... the whole thing that happened with these two was inevitable. It was going to happen no matter what just because of who these two are.
