"Mirror, Mirror" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2

Comments

Yep, more peak Trek. You are in a very good middle stretch here. Hey, speaking of "very good middles" - yeah. Uhura absolutely steals this episode. I was always puzzled about the navels in this one - network censors prohibited their appearance at the time, so I am not sure how these snuck through. My new working theory is that these fine men said. "WHOA!!!" and got distracted by how absolutely ripped Nichelle Nichols was. I am going to refer to that as my "Bunny Theory" giving credit where credit is due. A couple of personal notes on this one... I was always disappointed Yeoman Rand was gone by the time this was done. Her as the "Captain's Woman" in this episode would have been amazing! And a catfight in the transporter room between bare midriff Rand and Uhura would have altered the lives of many a teenaged boy! One other thing is really cool in production... when they "flipped" the Mirror Enterprise to go the other way they could not use their regular model because the left side was all struts and holes and cables and such. Reversing the film would show reversed lettering. (They used reverse lettering with reversed film in later episodes as needed.) But in this one they went back to the original wooden Enterprise model used for The Cage. The two most notable different features (at least for me) are on the nacelles. The front has a solid red dome with a spike in the middle of it (versus the spinning turbine-type lights) and the back of the nacelles show vents in an undulating surface, versus having the "sphere" bulging out the back as in the later model. So glad to see they kept this in the CGI remaster. As an fyi, the "rear nacelle end vents" usually appeared in the weekly episode closing "ride off into the sunset" shots as they just re-used that old footage again and again.

I fell so hard for Barbara Luna when this aired just one week before my 11th birthday 🥰🥰 I also think "our" universe should have those uniforms, so HOT!

All the STC episodes are top tier. The only fan films I can watch. I was happy to fund their episodes when they were raising funds.

I was aware of STAR TREK CONTINUES but unaware of their sequel episode, which I will watch soon. However, I was surprised to see that the story was about 'Evil' Kirk's return to his Enterprise. I thought it was going to be about 'Evil' Kirk and friends on the 'Good' Enterprise breaking out of the brig and taking over the ship for a while. So it blows my mind that there were actually TWO more stories to tell. If Trek had had a fourth season, these ideas combined could have given the series another striking two parter opening Season 4.

I will also say re the knock on the head to Evil Spock: I think we've been conditioned to think about injuries in film a certain way. If someone were to just smash something like that across a person's head it seems very reasonable to me that a cracked skull, life threatening injuries etc might result. But because it's tv unless it's a bullet wound, laser beam, or blood and guts we kinda just expect them to no-sell it and jump back up. Not to say your reaction was wrong or anything, B, I think we all thought it the first time myself included. Just my best guess as to why.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Top tier episode. What else is there to say? Action, adventure, romance, comedy, sci fi, greater questions about morality, this one really does have it all and manages to pull it all off. Star Trek at it's best. My takeaway had always been that everyone in the mirror universe was just inherently more evil (because sci fi tv lol) than our own crew and that lead to some important, world shaping decisions playing out differently à la City on the Edge of Forever and caused the greater politics of that universe to be different from our own even while a lot of the day-to-day stuff plays out similarly ie the acid on McCoy's countertop. Of course everything is going to be at least somewhat subjective so who's to say my headcanon is the one that's correct. Either way, what a ride! Phew! See you next week, B🖖

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

It always made me think of Phil Silvers in McHale's Navy

"The Beard!" Spock's beard also became another meme.

Sure Kirk could have killed the mirror Halkans figuring mirror Kirk would have too upon his return but Kirk would have still had to live with ordering their deaths.

Chas Summers

Thank you!

bunnytails

Yes, exactly! I'm watching them all so.. why are people so upset!? hehe :)

bunnytails

It was mentioned a few times, yes. :P

bunnytails

Okay, I'm getting more and more convinced about Star Trek Continues. Should I do it before or after looking at the animated series?

bunnytails

Thanks!

bunnytails

That's a VERY interesting idea.

bunnytails

I might react to Star Trek Continues actually

bunnytails

Very good, indeed :D

The part where Kirk said "In every revolution, there's one man with a vision" always made me think of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bunny, Here is a link to the original second season opening of Star Trek, in case no one else sent you one. I hope your husband is feeling stronger. That was very brave of you to share something very personal with us. I just encouraged someone recently to give an extra hug to his wife. None of us knows how much time we have. Always enjoy your reactions!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxCDyIUMwHs

I'm glad you liked this one, Bunny. A favorite of mine also. "WHOAAAAAAAAA". Yeppers, that is a gorgeous outfit. LOL. Best ever reaction 😊. Keep up the fun. Camera is great, BTW!. 🙏 for your husband also. I have sick friends also. No need for more. No worries on the order, just do a Pokemon' . Gotta watch 'em all. 🥹

lmao Bunny you almost heiled there. Not much to be said that others haven't said. Very famous episode. I hope no one on YouTube hyped it too much.

SuicuneSol

Great response, as always. As far as Kirk keeping the Enterprise from destroying the Halkans: in the last scene, Kirk told Spock to become the captain of that Enterprise and to find a logical way to save the Halkans and make it stick. We are left to imagine what happens after the mirror landing party returns, but as others have already mentioned, that Star Trek Continues episode is a great sequel. You'll feel like it was the actual series.

Sorry I meant tish link for the title sequences:

DeathLover

Here’s a quick link I found to the original title sequences (which use mostly the Pilot's Enterprise in the SFX) : https://youtu.be/irIthtlkNZY?si=5Axt2_v3VK0af2bX and here’s a link to some “background” / title sequence on what lead to this universe from the different “perspective” of what’s on a movie you saw :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXw6hC7hxBA

This is one of the episodes I have been waiting to talk about. This is head cannon, but the episode, "City on the Edge of Forever" where they accidentally changed history? This is that alternate universe where Hitler won.

This is one of my favorite episodes, in my Top 10 in fact. For many of the reasons that both yourself Bunny and Skyman in the post above said. It's really fun to see everyone act out of character, and the actors must have really enjoyed it as well. This episode introduced the idea of the 'Mirror Universe' which would show up again in later Star Trek shows cause of course the idea was too good to leave alone. :) There was even a Star Trek game, Shattered Universe for the PS2, that took place just in the Mirror Universe. I agree it was great how Uhura acted here, and her uniform looked great. I did find it curious about how they seemed cautious to 'kill' any of the main people in this episode. Later episodes in the Mirror Universe would establish that it doesn't matter what happened to ONE of you, the other person could still go on living. Perhaps nobody had thought that far ahead, since so much of this was done on the fly.

We have been waiting for you to see this episode. It is universaly on most people's favorites list. This is another episode that puts a concept forward referenced and explored a number of times over the next fifty plus years of Star Trek. Trivia: Barbara Luna was extremely ill for this epsode. She showed up for the first day of shooting with a temperature of 103 and they sent her home. She came back two weeks later to do her scenes. She lost enough weight that the costume Marlena changed into no longer fit. Bill Theiss found some fabric to put over her with a little something underneath to wear for that scene. Vic Perrin who played the Hulkan leader also was the voice of Nomad in "The Changeling." He was best known as the "Control Voice" in the "Outer Limts" from the early 1960's. If you check it out, you will hear him at the start and end of every episode. About ten years ago there was a fan based re-creataion of Star Trek called "Star Trek Continues." They made about ten episodes, on re-created sets built and lighted to the exact specs of the orignal. On screen they looked identical. One episode was "Fairest of Them All" which is a part two sequel of "Mirror, Mirror" It begins with a shot for shot match of the final scene with Kirk and Spock in the alternate Enterprise transporter room. It continues with the return of the alternate universe Kirk and party and explores what will happen next. Chris Doohan, son of James Doohan, plays Mr. Scott, as well. Here is a link if you care to screen it for yourself. It answers many of your thoughts about what effect Kirk had with Spock. https://youtu.be/irIthtlkNZY?si=5Axt2_v3VK0af2bX If that doesn't work then search "Star Trek Continues E03 "Fairest of Them All" on YouTube. I’d say there are a handful of Star Trek episodes that you could show to even people who may not like Star Trek and they would still be entertained because it’s simply, straight up, great television. I think Mirror Mirror is one of them. In every way, it’s about as good as it gets.

Skyman's Follies

Oh boy oh boy, been waiting for this one
